As more people got access to degrees gradually they weren’t seen as worth as much… fast forward to today where we’re being told machines can & should do our thinking & our work. The oligarchs saying this are descendants (in some cases literally) of the people who tried to keep most of us uneducated.

This has perfectly summarised what I have been thinking. This has led to a massive financial hit in Sunderland where the Uni is a serious driver of employment and growth. Utter madness

I have always long thought that all post viral diseases, including ME, are non specific. So slow replicating virus mutations that fail to be cleared and or have got into places they should like beyond the blood brain barrier. Result- permanent infection. Sufferers are often hyperimmune.

Biology I think is generally disordered and context specific and difficult to predict and LLMs continue to struggle and I am not sure that is something LLMs can get round.

One of the lessons of the last two years is that Labour urgently needs to stop being afraid of its own shadow. Burnham should appoint whoever he thinks would be the best Chancellor and throw his authority behind them. The Daily Mail will try to kill them anyway. So just govern.

A brave leader would regulate the social media platforms and legislate to say what they are- publishers and the legal requirements of that. Not ban poor kids. Also the over 55s are the most at risk from misinformation from what I can see. Ban them if any group.

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

Maybe I don't understand economics, but isn't raising rates typically to dampen an overheating economy. When all the shocks are external and people already have less money how does raising interest rates help and not just cause stagflation? I genuinely would like it explaining in simple terms!

I have never understood why external inflation which we can do nothing about and skews the data means interest rate rises which presumably have zero impact on the situation? Especially since the economy is hardly overheating and is in fact probably more stagnant. Can any one explain?

Exactly and the winners are the student loan company who cream off a vast profit whilst HMRC do most of the work. Being honest about it being a tax would remove the profiteering and reduce costs.
