Toronto Ashbridge's Bay 1936, looking northwest from coal harbour Artist: Nicholas Hornyansky, 1896-1965 Medium: Aquatints (prints) Baldwin Collection of Canadiana, Toronto Public Library #printmaking #skyline #city #shipping #torontoart #art #artist #toronto #canada
Foreground: The immediate foreground is dominated by calm water, depicted with subtle texture and variations in green and gray tones suggesting ripples and reflections. A small tugboat is visible in the lower left, adding a sense of scale and activity.

Midground: A large cargo ship, predominantly reddish-brown, is anchored or moored on the right side. The midground also features what looks like a snow-covered or light-colored industrial area or landmass between the city and the water's edge.

Background: The skyline of a city is the focal point of the background. The buildings are rendered in shades of gray and muted colours, suggesting a potentially industrial or older cityscape. The structures vary in height and design, with taller buildings standing out against the rest.
A hazy or smoky atmosphere obscures some details, lending a slightly nostalgic or even melancholic mood. The sky above is filled with softly brushed clouds, mostly in a muted yellow-gray palette, with hints of warmer tones near the horizon.

Style: The artistic style has the appearance of a blend of watercolor and possibly pencil or ink techniques. The colours are generally subdued, with soft transitions and textures creating a feeling of depth and atmosphere. The artist employs a slightly impressionistic approach, prioritizing mood and atmosphere over highly detailed realism. The overall effect is evocative and slightly dreamlike.

Behind Sherbourne St. (Toronto) 1970 Artist: Albert Jacques Franck, 1899-1973 Medium: Oil painting Baldwin Collection of Canadiana, Toronto Public Library #oilpainting #architecture #winter #city #torontoart #art #artist #toronto #canada
An oil painting which depicts a snowy urban scene, a back alley featuring a cluster of closely situated houses.

Here's a breakdown of the visual elements:

Houses: The main focus is on two houses. One is primarily a deep reddish-brown with green trim around the windows and roofline. It shows a porch with wooden steps partially covered in snow. The other house is a lighter beige or off-white, also with green window trim, and a steeper, more prominent gabled roof. A third house is partially visible in the background. The architecture suggests older buildings, possibly row houses.

Snow: Snow covers the ground, creating a textured surface suggesting recent snowfall. It's piled against the steps and around the base of the buildings.

Trees: Bare, winter branches of trees extend into the upper portion of the painting, adding to the wintry feel.

Style: The painting style is Post-Impressionistic. The brushstrokes are visible and expressive, not aiming for photorealistic detail, but rather capturing the essence of the scene and its atmosphere. Colours are slightly muted and earth-toned, suitable for depicting a cold, overcast day.

Overall Mood: The overall mood is quiet and contemplative. The snowy scene evokes a sense of stillness and isolation. The proximity of the buildings suggests a densely populated urban environment.
