If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via study that still underestimates climate cost. This isn’t about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath

Liberton and District Community Council survey (Local Place Plan)

THE City of Edinburgh Council is currently seeking ‘Local Place Plans’ from communities such as that represented by the Liberton and District Community Council to feed into its wider planning guidance for the city, between 2030 and 2040.

To that end, you are invited by the Liberton and District Community Council - to share your views in this survey as to how the district might be shaped in the future.

You are invited to complete this survey by 30th April 2026, which will provide the Community Council the time to consider whether to organise other engagement exercises, including in-person ones.

Please be reassured: your answers will be anonymised when compiling any reports, and all email addresses will be confidential and only used to communicate the survey results. We are, however, asking you to share your street address (not the number) and postcode so that it at least partly confirms you are a genuine resident of the area represented by the Liberton and District Community Council. That area is shown on the map below.outline map area for Bruntsfield Local Place PlanFacebook post by Scott ARthur MP asking for comments on Balerno LPP - plus historic photo of former Balerno rail station

cover page of new Spokes Favourite Bike Rides booklet, with photos of some of the rides insideA taster page from the booklet - favourite ride from Balerno to Fountainbridge, with photos of the entrant, the colinton tunnel, and a map

3 A Beeline to the City
11 km, 7 miles 40–60 minutes E
This is a straightforward route, suitable for cyclists of all abilities. The surfaces are good, navigation is
simple, there is no traffic to worry about and the going is almost completely level. It’s worth lingering in
the Colinton Tunnel to view the impressive murals.
Start: Balerno End: Fountainbridge
From Bridge Road, take the signposted Water of Leith path
(NCN 75), which starts near Balerno High School. Follow
the path for about 7 km as it meanders alongside the
river. You will pass Spylaw Park (on your right), then go
under the City Bypass and through the Colinton Tunnel.
The path eventually leaves the Water of Leith, crossing
the Lanark Road by a footbridge before dropping down to
the Union Canal towpath.
With the canal on your right, take the towpath (still NCN
75) for a further 4 km to its terminus at Fountainbridge.
(Care is needed when crossing the Slateford Aqueduct.
Cyclists are very strongly advised to dismount on this
narrow section of path; those with a poor head for heights may prefer to avoid it completely.)

Gregor Steele
Gregor came back to cycling after he
retired. He enjoys leisurely rides in
the country, which he says fit in with
his other hobbies: photography and
local history. He is also a writer and
poet, and does a lot of his composing
while riding.
Why this is my favourite ride:
This is a journey
to be enjoyed at
a leisurely pace.
There is beauty
to be found all
along the route,
but for me the
highlight is
the Colinton
Tunnel, with its
famous murals.
I have passed through it many times,
but always find something new.

Text: It is only by such comprehensive and organised schemes where every part is in its proper place and co-ordinated with the whole, that we can very hope to attain unity of purpose and economy in house building; and at the same time secure that every house, however humble, shall be a sanitary house. For although every house must be built by someone, yet in a well-ordered community the ultimate responsibility for every house should, and must rest, with the Authority in whose sanitary area it exists.

Researchers are looking for electric cargo bike and trike owners to fill in a survey which takes approximately 17 minutes to complete. They hope that the answers to their questions can help future policy decisions. The questions cover issues around parking for cargo bikes and cycle route accessibility for larger bikes, including issues with kissing gates and the width of lanes.
