It is said that Buses in Greater Manchester are in 'public control'. Really? Private bus operators get circa £200M of public subsidy to run buses and make profit for shareholders. 'Public control' is limited to routes, timetables, service frequencies, and ticket structure.

This is central influence with weak local democratic oversight. Mayors have thin democratic mandate - pathetic electoral turnouts ( PM as gtr manchester mayor had less than 1 in 5 voting for him). And no regional assemblies- so no broader accountability www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

UK government should be using the heat crisis as an opportune moment to mobilise the country and people around the climate catastrophe- highlighting the need for behaviour shifts, reducing consumption, end of fossil fuels etc. Instead it doesn't even talk about climate crisis.

Only 25% voted in Greater Manchester Mayoral elections. This woeful turnout is a trend. Clearly little enthusiasm for City regional Mayors, who have thin democratic mandate. If Mayors are to receive more powers, then we need regional assemblies to deepen democractic accountability and scrutiny.

There is a buzzy cheerleading fraternity around the new UK Prime Minister, and a collective self satisfaction - 'we did it'! However, vaste swathes of the country are nonplussed. The PM needs to start emitting some detailed strategy, policies and plans to match the big change rhetoric.

Much mainstream UK centrist politics across centre left to right is not systemic. Its basically surface, with warm words, retail offering based on personality and gimicky policies. Trust me they say. However, their abiding partnership is with the UK establishement and their corporate donors.
