A busy 2nd quarter with 2,706 hours of practical volunteering recorded, making the running total 5332 hours. After the big spring clean we've moved to a more diverse list of tasks on the wallway, treating INNS biological surveys and wildflower scything

As the seasons change its that time of year when we begin our fungi surveys of Craiglockhart and Colinton Dells. Thus it was great to get out for a refresher on the Autumn @fieldstudiesc.bsky.social Fungi course run by Chris Knowles. Lots of knowledge gained and ready to be put into action

Early morning sun across Wigtown bay and marshes at the site of the martys stake. Margaret Maclauchlan and Margaret Wilson were Scottish Covenanters who were executed in 1685. They were tied to stakes on the mudflats and allowed to drown with the rising tide.

A very lucid, humane and ultimately optimistic Nicholas Stern gave the annual James Mirrielees lecture at Wigtown book festival today. His 2006 conclusion that the cost of action on climate change is less than the cost of inaction is even more true in his new book. press.lse.ac.uk/books/m/10.3...

Congratulations to all involved with St Cuthbert's Way, which has just been named among "50 inspirational travel destinations" in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel guide. The book says the 62-mile route is "perhaps the closest thing modern Britain has to a Camino de Santiago". Have you walked it?

After I lifted the tatties in July I planted purple tansy (phacelia) in the small patch of my back garden. Not only are the purple flowers vibrant, but the patch is humming with pollinators right now.

Warm and windy for a ride out by Rosebery, Middleton etc. In shock news both an Audi and a BMW patiently waited until oncoming traffic had passed and then overtook with wide berth. I almost fainted.

💯 support the parents here. It’s been longer than a decade. I was the first parent council chair in 2007 when my oldest son was in P1 (he’s 24 now) and the campaign was already 2 years old at that stage. The speed at which some vehicles pass the school is appalling. Safety measures long overdue

Very odd. “I expect that the expansion of parking spots beyond the current operating zone will attract a lot of feedback and understandable resistance / scepticism.” Many of the residents of Craiglockhart that I know would warmly welcome expansion of the Voi scheme.

I take heart from the knowledge that the vast majority of decent people will be as appalled at this as I am. We need to isolate this behaviour and call it for what it is: shameless far right bigotry and thuggery.

Important analysis. Decisions about licensing more fossil fuel extraction in the North Sea are being sold as protecting jobs and economic prosperity. But new licences won’t do that. Providing jobs and retaining skills comes from accelerating the transition to renewable energy.

I first camped at Loch Doon in 1977, aged 11, at the area marked CA3 on the map (and a few times since). Took a wander down yesterday in light of the new camping byelaw proposed by @eastayrshire.bsky.social. The boundary shown in red and the 3 permit areas shown. Seems an excessive area to the west.

There can be few better “wee” hills than Cioch na h-Oighe. It’s arguably not even a hill - more just the end of the ridge, but it’s a lovely slabby climb up and then two sets of pinnacles. I was first up here in 1980 aged 14 and many times since. I never tire of it.
