More of this please! This team held focus groups with young people and their experiences of “addiction” to social media *do not resemble* typical substance use-derived criteria ❌ withdrawal ❌ tolerance ❌ relapse ❌ need for clinical intervention

Without actually sending your scripts/data to other people, it can be hard to ensure others can easily use your materials. This looks like a great solution. Another cool feature is that users can also tweak scripts to see how conclusions can change when different parameters are used.

Yeah it was fun, but I love that movie anyway. All the new content was at the very end/credits, and the wild thing was that 2/3 of the people in the theatre left without seeing most of the new stuff! The entire point of the re-release!

This is very good. “Over 2.2 million cancer deaths can be attributed to Costco; that’s more than 20% of all cancer deaths between 2000 and 2018.”
Ridiculous things you can “prove” caused cancer mortality

Everything causes cancer. Sounds cliché; maybe those California warning tags were right all along. But thanks to the methodology created by Alwadi et al., we can now prove that anything and everything causes cancer. Oh, sorry, that is too strong of an assertion. To use the authors’ words, since they have claimed their papers don’t prove causality, we can create an association between any physical landmark and cancer and, from that association, figure out how much cancer is attributable to that thing. Which is totally not the same as saying “that thing causes cancer.”

For instance, living near a private four-year university is associated with a 15-fold increase in cancer mortality when compared

"Replication crisis" reforms like preregistration & pre-analysis plans were developed to control false positives in experimental research. Does that work in observational studies? Our new paper in Sociological Methods & Research argues for a different approach. 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
A Replication Framework for Observational Research: From Specification Restriction to Specification Expansion
Jonathan Ben-Menachem https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8092-0848 jbenmenachem@gmail.com, Ari Galper https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7909-8837, and Nic Fishman
Abstract
Sociology has remained relatively insulated from debates about the “replication crisis.” Heeding calls to consider replication more deeply, we introduce a distinction between two types of research reforms that have emerged in the wake of the crisis: specification-restricting and specification-expanding reforms. Specification restriction is often promoted as a way to increase the repeatability of research findings by controlling false positives. We argue that this statistical justification is less compelling in observational contexts—where the assumptions licensing false-positive control are harder to sustain and rigid ex ante analytical commitments can instead enshrine fragile specifications—than in experimental contexts. We further argue that apparently low replication rates do not necessarily imply a high prevalence of false positive findings. Instead, we propose a replication framework centered on specification-expanding reforms, stronger incentives for confirmatory research, and meta-analysis. This approach equips sociologists to assess the repeatability of findings and build a more cumulative discipline.

Been thinking about this. People say 'social contagion' like it's a bad thing. Yeah, if you put it like that. What it really is is just: people sharing information. Yes, it can increase identification. That's a feature.

This is ridiculous. The only avenue for fellowships for international scholars has been the K99. It was already so hard to get, and now there is no way for them to come and train and build a career in the US. It will decimate our ability to recruit the best scholars around the world.
