To me it doesn’t matter. I don’t care if it’s Taylor Swift or Elon Musk. The idea of a billionaire is ethically repugnant to me, regardless of whether or not they are perceived to be a ‘good person’.

I think the fundamental moral/ethical question of “can billionaires be justified” is pretty simple though. No one can ‘earn’ a billion dollars. It can only be obtained through exploitation of other human beings and the environment

Hipkins and Luxon would rather piss on 4.5 million of us, than piss off 2828 ultra rich people who are, or who have realistic ambitions to be, billionaires. #nzpol

There are apparently 28 (!!) billionaires in AoNZ. Let's say as a high side estimate there are 100 times that number with $100m-$1b who could become billionaires at some stage. That's 2828 ultra wealthy people.

Dave @dpdiver.bsky.social · 9h
Both of them copped out, and rather than give the easy answer "No, billionaires are not morally justifiable. No one's talent and effort during one lifetime can justify the possession of $1b of wealth" they both diverted with a version of "Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed..."

Of all the issues that 2xChris prevaricated on last night, the billionaire question is the one that has been bugging me the most overnight, and I think I've figured out why: #nzpol

#nzpol In relation to alleged "$cost" of restoring pay equity ... Am interested in "$cost" of: (1) abolishing child labour? (2) abolishing slavery? (3) forcing employers to provide safe working places? (4) allowing workers to take annual leave? "$Cost" is NOT relevant🤔. They are rights✊. 🙏

I tell you what makes forecasting difficult... ignoring the leading indicators that matter, believing the often 100% wrong models in economic textbooks, relying on vibe surveys, and having blind faith in the business cycle (it's gone down so it will come up)

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Here on Bluesky my (or anyone's) participation in your online life is contingent on consent, and if I or anyone else withdraws it, that should be the end of it. A subsequent screencap after a quote removal suggests that consent is not a thing you care about, which is good for the rest of us to know.

Coultard’s comment re: F1 cars and environmental conditions seems pertinent
It’s not like developing a road car where they have to start at minus 20 and they have to be [also] able to operate in very warm conditions.

There is a normal sort of operating window for a Grand Prix car.

And certainly, with this humidity, with that amount of rain, with a very slow lap, with the issue for Max, it never tested them to do that. And now quite a few of them have found out they can’t do that
