If we choose pluralism over parochialism, we can still be true to our own faith and beliefs, whatever they might be. We can do so out of humility and respect. Not sure whether I'm reacting to a certain justice, or channeling Fr. Brown today.

Well, this explains why our sly priest spoke two salutations in French during Mass. "His father was away on business in France when he was born. Upon returning, his father changed his birth name (Giovanni) to Francesco, meaning "the little Frenchman," because of his love for French culture."

One of the celebrated aspects of Saint Francis's life was his rapprochement, at great personal risk, toward a Muslim leader in the midst of the Fifth Crusade, and its lasting effects. Truly a man of peace. Perhaps there are still lessons for us here. www.gordonconwell.edu/blog/damiett...

Listened to a sermon today. This day marks 800 years to the day since the death of St. Francis of Assisi. Since Catholic feast days are celebrated from when saints enter into eternal life, it's also his feast day today. The pope has designated 2026 as the Jubilee Year of Saint Francis.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Mathematicians studied knots under "knot theory" for about a quarter of a millenium, but never analysed what kinds of knots humans have actually tied. In this paper we applied knot theory to study human-made knots spanning over ten millennia. Turns out some of our everyday knots are very old.

The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.
