The dam removals that get the most press tend to be superlative western ones, like the Klamath and Elwha—big rivers, big fish. For @biographic.bsky.social, I wrote about some equally vital, under-the-radar projects now restoring eastern streams, one old mill dam at a time. #AlewivesAreTheNewSalmon

How did we let our politicians turn us into a society that resents public services, support, and kindness? How did we let them convince us that human decency and empathy are wrong? We really need to sort ourselves out before we kill ourselves through selfishness.

Folks have been telling me they’ve noticed I’ve gotten “a lot more political” on social media this year. Of course I have. The circumstances have gotten nightmarishly worse, and the consequences of inaction and staying silent infinitely more obvious. Everyone needs to get “a lot more political.”

Poor and working class students of color ALSO face the bullshit racism from people like Andreessen who use their existence as a shield from a real discussion about social inequality in society and as a mechanism for distributing the psychological wages of whiteness that white solidarity depends on.

The white students who are struggling to make ends meet are not struggling because Black and immigrant students got into our university. They are struggling because of a shitty social safety net & high tuition because people like Andreesen don't pay sufficient taxes/the state doesn't pay its share.

The economic consequences of the second Trump administration: A preliminary assessment
The world is adjusting to President Trump’s second ‘first hundred days’ in office. This column introduces a new CEPR eBook in which over 50 experts explore how the new administration’s policies are reshaping the US economy and sending ripples across the global economic order. While the assessment is preliminary, in part due to the great uncertainties inherent to President Trump’s style of policy development, collectively the contributions suggest that the policies of the new administration are likely to weigh negatively on both the US and global economy in the short and long term.
