The paired, leg-like appendages hanging out from this ant’s mouth don’t belong to some weird parasite. Instead, these are the maxillary (six segments) and labial (four) palps. Ant palps contain touch and taste sensors, and they are used to assess and manipulate food. Formica incerta. Woodstock, NY.

So sorry to hear today that Cedric Gillott (U.Saskatchewan) passed away Saturday. Many will know him from his textbook 'Entomology', but I knew him as my long-time partner in organizing & assembling the Bull. of the Ent. Soc. of Canada, & a fellow craft beer/cider lover. Rest in peace, my friend.

HOW MANY TIMES DID SEXUAL CANNIBALISM AND MALE SELF-SACRIFICE EVOLVE?

We are searching for an outstanding postdoc with a background in behavioural and evolutionary ecology to join an exciting project comparing sexual behaviour across all widow spider species at Ben-Gurion University.

THE PROJECT INCLUDES:
Literature survey of sexual behaviour and life history in widow spiders
Locating widow spider populations across the globe
Fieldwork in natural populations
Spider rearing and maintenance
Behavioural observations of mating interactions and outcomes
Integrating behavioural, morphological, ecological and phylogenetic data to reconstruct evolutionary trajectories and uncover coevolutionary relationships
JOIN OUR MISSION TO UNCOVER THE EVOLUTION OF SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR IN WIDOW SPIDERS
