Developing local ties in a mobile world: how mobility processes shape sense of place and sustainable management in destination areas Bousquet+ doi.org/10.5751/ES-1... "developed a typology of residents based on mobility, meaning, and attachments"
Fig. 5. Typology of residents according to mobility, meaning, and attachments.

s a synthesis of these relationships, we identify three different archetypes from our survey in four different towns in South-Africa, UK and France (Fig. 5):

The “connected locals” who are born in the town. They are attached to the town because they have strong family social connections, they are anchored, they feel safe in their town. They do not mention landscape and activities in the town as significant for meaning.
The “pragmatic neighbors” who come from neighboring towns. They have come for utilitarian reasons such as facilities offered by the town, jobs, and for family reasons such as schooling. They are not anchored and thus ready to move, the hypothesis being that they have their attachment to other nearby towns.
The “active newcomer (neophytes)” has relocated over longer distances (national, international) for lifestyle reasons. They are the most attached according to the general dimension of attachment. They come for the environment, report a landscape meaning for the town, and they value their activities in the town. They do not have strong social connections.

Compound food failure on a deteriorated mast system drives Japan’s bear conflict crisis Xiao+ doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.aej8134 Climate change amplifying human-wildlife conflict as failure of wild food sources drives bears into human dominated landscapes
Coupled ecological and conflict indicators across the five Tohoku prefectures.
(A) Japan-wide context for cumulative bear attack incidents (injury or fatality) since 2008, colored on a logarithmic scale. The inserted pie chart summarizes the species’ composition. (B) Situation of five study prefectures in Tohoku. Donut markers show cumulative prefecture-level incidents, partitioned into 2023, 2025, and all other years. (C) Annual conversion efficiency residuals from flower to mast production. Horizontal reference segments indicate the pre- and postbreak means, with the estimated regime shift year separating the two periods. (D) Prefecture-level MI through time; the dashed horizontal line marks 0.38 threshold (MIt). Bottom labels indicate years in which at least one of the five prefectures fell below the threshold. (E) Annual bear incidents count stacked by prefectures. (F) Annual detrended net photosynthesis anomaly (PsnNetd; grams of carbon per square meter) by prefecture.
