My suggestion though is perhaps that we actually extend less charitable thinking to the people who were in power who have apologized for nothing and insist they'd do it all over again than random people

'you're cognitively offloading'. yes. correct. that is what i wish to do. i do not wish to expend cognition figuring out which pharmacist takes my insurance and is closest. i want to offload it & be told who that is. you are free to continue manually doing this task you evidently find so meaningful

Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

After the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, the Trump administration shifted to a “quieter” approach to immigration enforcement. But as the timeline shows, “less visible enforcement is no less aggressive on the ground today and continues to ramp up in multiple ways."

reading about hayek (in wendy brown's "in the ruins of neoliberalism") and, to me, his theories are almost indistinguishable from graeber's. if anything, they are more fleshed out versions of graeber's ideas.

you see this most starkly with the fact that every generation must come up with their own new terminology of identity markers to rid themselves of the previous generation's prejudices (even when the words being replaced were themselves created to get rid of the prejudices of the generation prior)

there is a dimension of political contestation that just boils down to an elevated game of worldplay. you say "climate change", i say "extreme weather."

i don't know, the stuff jensen huang said that everyone is dunking on makes sense to me. google maps is a very helpful technology that also makes me store way less information about how to get around. it's a tradeoff.

love working on a doc that is authored by one person and checked by a group of others, with each reviewer asking me to make a bunch of changes that the author then tells me to change back. it's twice the work for a worse final product (since every iteration just creates more inconsistencies errors)!

the reason AI won't replace humans at a lot of jobs, and will simply augment human's work, is because in a lot of cases you need a stooge to be held liable...

it's funny to think that a lot of stuff people prize as "core eternal skills and values" that we shouldn't let new tech destroy were once themselves seen as pernicious destroyers of our true way of life.

I'll preregister my prior that the Dems will win at least 54 Senate seats--on the outside of what's possible in our polarized environment. Plenty of time, of course, for Democrats to do dumb things. But 54 seems to me the most likely outcome given where we are & the trajectory moving forward.

hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
one reason you should NOT do this is that in the short-term major reforms tend to elicit a much greater backlash from opponents than enthusiasm from supporters (because all major reforms involve some level of compromise between parties).

the lesson from the spanish second republic is...don't try to implement your entire radical agenda all at once. either choose agrarian reform, or taking on the catholic church, or reorganizing the military, or instituting federalism, or reforming the education system...but don't do them all at once!

got into an argument with my dad about whether "spain" has been a country since los reyes catolicos (later half of the 15th century). people really don't realize that regions in spain had borders with customs, their own laws and courts, and DIFFERENT CURRENCIES into the 19th century!

my own personal experience of engaging with left radicals these days has left me depressed by their complete lack of a coherent ideology, beyond pining for some vague sense of "community" that will work itself out or marching off into some tiny utopian off-the-grid project

looking back, it is so obvious to me now that J-PAL, the development research center i worked at so famous for introducing rigurous RCTs into policymaking in the mid-aughts, was a SUCH an emblematically neoliberal project.

"AI cannot think because only humans can think" is not an argument, but it's what you see over and over again from people. that's not a position based on any sort of logic or reason, it's based on belief in some inscrutable essence that cannot be described or defined but that we possess.

Which all just reeks of what happens when a status order gets upended by some new technique. Basically everyone who is under threat runs around shouting “Never mind what I appeared to value before, what I *really* value is this incredibly intangible thing I possess that also preserves my status”.

what's great and fun about these kinds of social media platforms is that you are encouraged to share half-cooked, quick, spur-of-the-moment thoughts and opinions, but then the game is that you must defend your post to the death and never back down from the silly momentary feeling or thought you had
