this dynamic (from brown's "in the ruins of neoliberalism") will get super-charged by AI...

just as fascism was taking root around the globe during the era of lázaro cardenas, so mexico remains a beacon for the left today...

if LATAM was (perhaps) the point of the spear for the introduction of authoritarian neoliberalism in the 1970s, it is once again at the vanguard for the new fascist surge that is at the fore globally

just been mulling this over recently. honestly haven't been paying enough attention to it this year, but has been a region i've lived in and followed off and on for most of my adult life. and there are a bunch of basic reasons why LATAM would be so receptive to (essentially) fascist movements

is latin america the most successful example of the democratic far-right take over of government? any other region come close?

This. Anthropic fucked up on the _process_ and they get no sympathy from me, but a hell of a lot of people here seem to think that it's self-evident that summarizing a text into weights in a model is a violation of copyright and boy oh boy do I not think that's self-evident at _all_.

seeing all these right wing governments take over everywhere gives me the opposite impression. that trump might have still gone on to become president even had he lost in 2016

listening to "know your enemy" and them declaring 2016 "the fork in the road moment" for global politics as it relates to the rise of right wing movements, because it allowed others to see "oh wow this could work" seems very naive and not at all how things actually work

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

do you *have* to impeach or else it sets a precedent that this level of corruption and illegality can go on without action from congress or does three failed attempts at impeachment cheapen it as a tool?
000
hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
yeah, i really don't know what the politics of impeachment are at this point. does it publicize the wrongdoings of the president or just sound like partisan bickering that people tune-out

it's crackpot, but hey, so is trying to start tiny fringe groups that will grow and never be snuffed out by states whenever they feel threatened
010
hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
so, the (fanciful) theory of action would be to reach power throughout the major states and begin implementing anarchism at the internaional level
100
hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
that's where you have the best conditions to actually implement a theory of non-coercive, non-hierarchical, non-state (as in world government) system
100
hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
ironically, if i were an anarchist i think the place i would try to start to implement my vision is not at the small-scale local level but at the international state level

there is always the possibility for error (as there is for human error when i do this data collection), which requires me to double check a subset of them. but it has made my life soooo much easier at work thanks to this technology.

i will just input a spreadsheet into AI with the columns that need to be filled in and it fills them in for me by scouring through the internet for that information. it gives me notes along the way telling me which ones it is less sure about.

hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
concrete example: part of my work involves soliciting grants which require incredibly burdensome data collection on people who have participated in any grant-funded activity (their current job, position, email address, research output, etc.). i have to do this for like over a hundred individuals.

hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
what are these people talking about? the whole point of AI is it gets past the need to go through technical training in coding and allow you to generate extremely intricate code using regular language. you don't have to "go create a model", that's the point!

hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

hunchback from sardinia @dogfromsinope.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
labor market too has been on a truly historic run. remember when economists thought that 5% was the floor for unemployment? well, we've had almost 10 straight years of under 5% unemployment (with the exception of 2020-21 pandemic) and wage growth is also doing historic stuff

It was a pleasure editing this article, which details how the Nixon administration's assault on science eerily parallels that of Trump 2.0—even using the same administrative entity, the Office of Management and Budget, to axe funding. Check it out at @physicstoday.aip.org!

on the bright side, it's good that all these coded terms like "high-trust society" and "cultural cohesion"--which you would see thrown around a lot by pretty prestigious empirical social scientists during much of the 2000s and 2010s--are now rightly being associated with racists and eugenicists

as ever i'm struck by the doublethink of these people, who feel the need to dress up their mindless longing for heirarchy and exclusion in the language of liberalism--"high trust," material prosperity, blah blah blah it's a form of magical thinking: "if we do enough racism, good things will happen"

i see it as a commentary on a society drowning in archives, books, written word that is mostly just gathering dust

one fascinating trend i have noticed in recent literature (and movies), especially in latin america, is the incorporation of archeology and archival research as an integral part of the story (and the writing style). examples include the work of valeria luiselli and cristina rivera garza
