For innate T cell enthusiasts, happy to share our preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6.... We show that mycobacterial lipid–reactive CD1b-specific T cells transcriptionally resemble conventional CD4 T cells more than other innate-like T cells, challenging how we classify these T cells. #CD1b #GEM

Please fill this out if you care about science. The vast majority of what we understand about the host response to TB was first identified in mice and then demonstrated in humans. Small animal models continue to be an essential component (in partnership with NAMs) of infectious disease research!

Let’s look at it another way: From 1986-2017, 87.7% of NIGMS MERIT awards went to men. From 2000-2017, 84.9% of NIGMS MERIT awards went to men. From 2007-2017, 80% of NIGMS MERIT awards went to men. These statistics overlap with a period when men were submitting ~2/3 of NIHgrants

I know at least 5 peeps w/NIH grants that have scored 1-4% who are not being funded. My hopes are those who are funded are using their resources to help others, particularly junior faculty. Sharing resources, personnel, time, etc… If we don’t all pull together, science and the country suffers.

A line graph of the fraction of multiyear funding. The line for FY2025 increased in the last third of the year and the level in FY2026 is already high.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted. What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards. Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

This is a really great looking graph if you hate science. It would be great if we see a significant uptick in the pace of awards moving forward, but my guess is the chances of that are slim.
