Yeah education policy is indirectly one of the areas where we’re most fucked by having an insane and evil right wing party because the liberal education establishment is in many ways extremely bad.

For me in software, I think there’s something big a person brings to the table that an LLM can’t: accountability. You can yell at an LLM all you want after it screws up, and in the next session it’s gone. A person has an incentive to actually understand the problem and stand by the solution

I legitimately worry about the color of light bulb I buy, because I know I’ll be stuck with it for years. It’s a good problem to have, and one that would be unfathomable even 20 years ago

The funny thing is, I don't know if Vance is a racist - I just know he thinks his voters are and they agree. Vance is a cynic who will say anything to get power, who will make up blood libels against Haitians, believe anything. Vance is, if anything, worse than a racist.

Also, we of course understand why some people might think we use AI for these graphics, but rest assured we don't and spent 10 minutes rotating that stock picture of the coyote just right and then another 15 minutes trying to decide what the opacity should be for the stock dust cloud in the back.

How to visit an art museum with someone who isn't used to visiting art museums:
Two social media posts by @pan_juho (Translated from Japanese):

"I love going to art museums, but when I go with someone who's not used to them, if I say, 'If you were a great thief, tell me later which one you'd steal,' they end up looking the exhibits pretty seriously, and that makes me happy.

"Whether you steal something you like or something that seems valuable -> it opens up endless conversation based on what vou liked about it or where you saw value in it, so it's also great as an easy icebreaker for chats after visiting the museum."

We've basically run this experiment when we created two German states, both populated primarily by ethnic Germans, after WWII. West Germany got one set of policies, East Germany another and the differences in development are so stark they persist 35 years after reunification.

On the one hand, I shouldn't wish my country ill. On the other hand, Canada's grandfathers bled with my grandfathers fighting the Nazis. When we were attacked on 9/11, we asked Canada to send their sons and they bled with our troops in Afghanistan. To betray that bond - we'll deserve what we get.

I’m definitely a Georgist, but I haven’t seen anything that convinces me that UBI won’t just get sucked up by landlords. It’s what we’ve seen happen to the excess wealth being generated in SF and NYC, and UBI proponents haven’t shown me anything that means UBI won’t just do the same thing writ large

And then actually vote! Politicians feel free to ignore the concerns of young people because the absolute bedrock baseline immovable constant of politics has been that the youth vote won't turn out. If it started turning out, our politics would change substantially.

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create

I remember I got into an argument on reddit awhile ago with a person over Italian food. It got to the point they were following me into other subs to harass me.
I clicked on their profile to block them and their most recent post was them drinking their own piss on
• r/piss. At that moment I realized I had spent so much pointless time arguing about the taste of food with someone who drinks their own piss as a hobby.

It seems relevant that the thing Isaiah is being sent to do in that passage is to deliver a prophecy of doom to his own people for having fallen away from the path of righteousness. So if these guys were like, Isaiah, that would be robustly bad news for...the United States.

Shouldn't use 'Achilles heel' to mean 'salient weakness'. If one thing is your Achilles heel, that means that you are basically perfect at every other thing. If you have several weaknesses of which one is worst you don't have an Achilles heel. You are not Achilles. You are Bob.

Don't get me wrong - parliamentary systems have their advantages (so do ours), but the existence of Orban and Netanyahu kinda aggressively suggest their limitations as well. There's just not a good solution to 'major party agrees to collectively go mad together because they became a cult.'

I will. You were correct to call me out for being crass about real human struggles
000
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Yup, in retrospect I regret my choice of framing. It was unnecessarily crass and unhelpful, and I am sorry for that
000
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I read it as trying to use it as an argument in a vacuum to convince Tom that it's happening. That was clearly the incorrect read on my part
100
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Totally fair. That's how it read in context, but I clearly misread you, and I apologize for that
100
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Absolutely so, and I regret my choice of analogy for that reason. Not my intent, but intent isn't as important as how it actually comes off, and I am sorry for missing the mark
000
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
"X denial is proof of X" can be both true and not helpful, because you can put anything in place of X. That was the point I was trying to make, but I also made it in a way that I'm not happy with by using a bad analogy. And I'm sorry about that
200
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I mentioned this elsewhere, but for the record: I genuinely regret my crass choice of analogy. I think there are very real concerns about genocidal intent, and my analogy completely masked that point in service of a much more minor one
000
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I don't, and that's why I regret my choice of analogy. I want to focus on those credible reasons
000
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Absolutely, and I never wanted to dismiss that fact; your anger is very reasonable given that I made it seem like I don't care about that. I do, and that's why I push people to use real evidence of genocidal intent, like that horrible treatment, rather than self-proving statements that say nothing
100
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
That wasn't my intent, and I'm genuinely sorry I came off that way. I worry about people using bad evidence to support their views, but in retrospect I was unnecessarily crass about the real struggles people have when making that point. And I am truly sorry for that
110
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Yes, I clearly meant that as a serious thing, and not to prove that genocide denial isn't a useful measuring stick for genocide on its own. 10/10 reading comprehension
000
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Absolutely not. I'm saying that the specific statement "denial of genocide is a stage of genocide" can be both true and a useless measuring stick. I used squirrels specifically because it's a silly idea, in order to make that point
200
David L @dmclap.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
There's a very real extent to which that's true, but it's also unfalsifiable. If I say there's a genocide against squirrels and you disagree, that isn't proof that squirrels are in danger. We need to be vigilant for genocidal rhetoric and behavior, but this on its own isn't a good signal
