Another thing. “Two years after Roberts' confirmation as chief justice in 2005, his wife, Jane Sullivan Roberts, made a pivot. After a long and distinguished career as a lawyer, she refashioned herself as a legal recruiter, a matchmaker who pairs job-hunting lawyers up with corporations and firms.“

John Roberts should be recusing himself from any case involving a corporation or law firm that has ever hired any of his wife’s clients. How many has he recused from?

When we talk about the corrupt Supreme Court, we’re not just talking about Clarence Thomas getting paid off or Scalia doing billionaire junkets. John Roberts’ spouse getting paid by BigLaw firms would also be considered corrupt under federal law for other government employees.

This is a very important point. The intellectual work that the right is trying to finance is shoddy and would not withstand peer review-which is why a key part of the movement is to replace peer review with "viewpoint diversity." The question is how to convince ppl to support humanistic scholarship.

I think that Roberts really did think that Trump v. US would be hailed as a Great Act of Statesmanship, when in fact it made the lawlessness and partisanship of the Court obvious to the layman who had a vaguely positive impression of the Court. Too bad!

If data centres have an easier time connecting to the grid rather than using off-grid gas, that doesn't make their climate impacts immediately zero or even beneficial somehow? Increasing grid demand still predominantly leads to worse climate impacts in the US.... www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Rob Gramlich, president of the consulting firm Grid Strategies LLC, said that although the package is technology neutral — meaning it doesn’t favor specific types of energy generation — it “enables a clean energy future” that’s “just going to be very hard to get” otherwise.

Consider data centers. One way to power them quickly is to build gas infrastructure on site. “This bill would open up a lot more options,” Gramlich said, adding that there are many states, utilities and technology companies looking to clean up their power supply.

With both Lake Powell and Lake Mead at record-lows, here’s a look at how their water levels have varied since Powell was filled in 1980. Neither has recovered from a severe drought in the early 2020s, while Colorado River flows continue to drop. #dataviz #climate #globalwarming
Two graphs of water stored in Lake Powell (left) and lake Mead (right). The data are measured over the water year, which runs from October 1st to October 1st. Years when the lake level increased are marked in blue, years when they decreased are marked in red. Levels in Lake Powell maxed out at about 24-million-acre–feet in the early 1980s, and are currently just over 5-million-acre-feet. Lake Mead was just over 25-million acre-feet in the early 1980s and late 1990s, but is now just under 7-million acre-feet.

Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now. This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.
