I think I might read this essay with my students to help them think about using personal experience as evidence in their writing. Also: was a matter of time for someone to write something like this. I’m glad this essay is in the world bc it will do much good for people in future viral stuff

Every stitch tells a story of love, community, and remembrance. Volunteers across MN created the "Stolen Neighbors Quilt" with 11,000 squares to honor Minnesotans detained by ICE. Each fabric square represents a neighbor, a family member, and a life impacted by deportation. We stand for Justice!

Transphobes have been very open about the fact that they view sports as a wedge issue; if they can get people to agree that trans women aren't *really* women in the context of sports, it's much easier for them to extend that to toilets and other public services.

New Dealers constantly acquiesced on stuff like anti-lynching laws bc of the power of Southern Dems to muck up passing legislation. There’s lots of stuff like this through modern day but I wonder if it weirdly grafts onto political campaigning like with trans rights. A sort of instinct to give in

“AI will kill us all” is how the tech industry, especially rich people in it, avoid talking about real world problems—ones they’re causing, exacerbating, or neglecting—while still thinking themselves good. “I’m better than all that,” they say. “I got high with my friends and BSed about the future.”

They should not have any control over how they are regulated. Not totally sure why this is a big press push for them, but I’m sure it’s not in the public interest and we should agree about regulation while keeping them far away from any control over how that regulation is instituted

I sincerely believe sometimes these requests are not in good faith and just try to paint skeptics as close-minded. For instance, you never hear “it would be great to add AI components when you teach source use since AI is now such a big part of search now”. No, you hear only “yay innovation!”

I require an AI non-use statement on certain writing assignments. If they include it, I go with/accept that (in general). Then, one way I reinforce the policy is that I end my comments on the substance of their work with, "Thanks for not using AI/LLMs/chatbots on this assignment."
