what's funny about this is that monks were perfectly delighted with the printing press, the myth that the late medieval church resisted printing is false, you can actually embellish printed books and people did, illuminators and scribes are not the same people, and simon should read more.

There’s an abundance of research indicating that once you get students past fear of falling grades, and fear of not getting a letter grade, too, they settle in, focus more on the learning, and actually demonstrate better acquisition of skills and concepts. Well done Michigan and keep going!

I really want to highlight that both the childcare worker shortage and this nonprofit work debt trap share the same root, which is that preschool teaching and "charity" work are feminized and therefore devalued labor.

One of most heartbreaking things about Hank Green turning to LLMs is that he gets to do science communication full-time to a massive audience and is well-resourced. He doesn't need to cut corners or outsource his thinking. Meanwhile, there are so many people doing amazing work with zero resources.

very funny logic here. it's "disrespectful" to cover the huge windows the architect built for a museum full of light-sensitive objects? have we not learned from harvard and rothko, from lacma and govan, from every light-based fuck up in the past 100 years of art. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/a...
The museum’s first response was to lower blackout shades on the large upper windows. But when Louise Mirrer, the director of the museum (formerly the New-York Historical Society), realized how much that undermined the wing’s soaring architecture, she insisted the shades be raised back up.

“I felt it was disrespectful of the architect’s final museum project,” Mirrer said in an interview. “We had to find a means that could accommodate both the architecture and the exhibition narrative — which we did.”

So, to protect the vulnerable works, the museum replaced 17 of them with reproductions and removed another three.

So the museum director swaps out artworks and historical objects for reproductions and color photocopies at the same time the show's longtime organizers and curators disavow the decision and quit the newly reopened museum? Meanwhile the same donors are also giving a wing at the Met.

What made so many cultural centers of the past - interwar Paris, 70s NYC East Side, 90s Seattle - was that young artists could live and feed themselves on a pittance, leaving them time and energy to work on their art.

THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING
A WOMAN ARTIST:
Working without the pressure of success
Not having to be in shows with men
Having an escape from the art world in your 4 free-lance jobs
Knowing your career might pick up after you're eighty
Being reassured that whatever kind of art you make it will be labeled feminine
Not being stuck in a tenured teaching position
Seeing your ideas live on in the work of others
Having the opportunity to choose between career and motherhood
Not having to choke on those big cigars or paint in Italian suits
Having more time to work when your mate dumps you for someone younger Being included in revised versions of art history
lot having to undergo the embarrassment of being called a geniu etting your picture in the art magazines wearing a gorilla sui

💀 Pygmalion displacement 💀 doi.org/10.31235/osf...
Table 1: The series of questions that comprise the Pygmalion lens. For a given technosocial relationship between AI and people,
if one or more of the answers are “Yes”, then we can conclude that (an aspect of) Pygmalion displacement is occurring, which
is damaging to women, and the feminised broadly construed. If not, then the lens does not apply, and we remain agnostic as to
gendered or other harm within this framework. Our proverbial lens should be taken inter alia to be akin to an optical lens which
allows for the eye to see more details than when naked, as depicted in the line drawing below. (Image is in the public domain.)
Pygmalion lens
1) Feminised form: Is the AI, by its (default or exclusive) external characteristics, por-
traying a hegemonically feminine character?
Yes/No
2) Whitened form: Is the AI, by its (default or exclusive) external characteristics, por-
traying a character that is inherently white (supremacist), Western, Eurocentric, etc.?
Yes/No
3) Dislocation from work: Does the AI displace women from a role or occupation, or
people in general from a role or occupation that tends to be (coded as) women’s work?
Yes/No
4) Humanisation via feminisation: Are the AI’s claims to intelligence, human-likeness
or personhood contingent on stereotypical feminine traits or behaviours?
Yes/No
5) Competition with women: Is the AI pit (rhetorically or otherwise) against women in
ways that favour it, and which are harmful to women?
Yes/No
6) Diminishment via false equivalence: Does the AI facilitate a rhetoric that deems
women as not having full intellectual abilities, or as otherwise less deserving of per-
sonhood?
Yes/No
7) Obfuscation of diversity: Does the AI, through displacement of specific groups of
people, “neutralise” (i.e., whiten, masculinise) a role, vocation, or skill?
Yes/No
8) Robot rights: Do the users and/or creators of the AI grant it (aspects of) legal per-
sonhood or human(-like) rights?
Yes/No
9) Social bonding: Do the users and/or creators
