Fuck the media obsession with finding out who Jane Doe “really” is. What is wrong with us as a society that we think someone’s identity is more important than what happened to them? Jane Doe isn’t a mystery to solve. She’s a human being. We are all Jane Doe.

If you are part of an academic society or a professor of any kind, public statements that you do not condone Drexel cutting off the academy of natural sciences from the public of Philadelphia is very important right now. We need your voices. Urgently.

When mask bans were first being enacted, disabled people warned they marked a return to Ugly Laws. They were a crucial step towards eliminating us from public life. They were designed to make us hide away, unable to safely exist in public. Disabled people are the canaries in the coal mine.

A lot of people are not well right now: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is an excellent time to de-escalate conflicts and to lean into patience. This is true in our personal lives and also (maybe especially) online when it's overwhelmingly strangers crashing into each other.

The #SciArtSeptember 🧪prompt is almond-shaped. Did you know that amygdala literally means almond-shaped? I didn’t, but now we both do. I used a (open source) brain MRI to make a cyanotype print and embellished it with metallic gold to show the almond-shaped feature, the paired nuclear complex
As described I used a (open source) brain MRI to make a cyanotype print and embellished it with metallic gold to show the almond-shaped amygdala, the paired nuclear complex present. It’s labelled “Amygdala” in gold and signed Ele Willoughby, 2026.

Becoming an HHMI Scientist (for Potential Program Applicants)
HHMI's June 2026 live virtual event was a chance for early career scientists to learn more and ask questions about HHMI's upcoming competitions — the Freeman Hrabowski Scholars and Hanna H. Gray Fellows Programs (applications open Nov. 3, 2026), and the Gilliam Fellows Program (applications open Sept. 1, 2026) — which provide generous support to scientists from graduate training through the early faculty years. Featuring Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer Leslie Vosshall; Scientific Program Officers Josh Hall, Angela DePace, and Jose Faraldo-Gomez; and Senior Science Program Coordinator Adrielle Munger, the event covered everything from the details of each program to what HHMI looks for in candidates, and key elements of a strong application. Visit hhmi.org/programs to learn more, and stay connected via email (https://www.hhmi.org/newsletters) and social (below) for regular updates. _____ Follow HHMI https://www.instagram.com/hhmi_science/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/howard-hughes-medical-institute https://www.facebook.com/HowardHughesMed https://x.com/hhmi_science Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/hhmi-science.bsky.social

The advice I was given was to ask after being accepted. Basically make sure they definitely want before negotiating the accommodations you want. That being said, I’ve not yet had the chance to try this myself, so cannot confirm how well it works.

During my PhD I attended a seminar on where to go next with academic and research careers. I had one question: “are there any part-time postdoc positions?” I didn’t get an answer. That silence showed me just how big the barrier was for us with disabilities.

Dolly is gone, but I'll always appreciate her funding and publicly receiving the Moderna vaccine, in addition to her advocacy to wipe out childhood illiteracy.
Picture of Dolly Parton with a mask on with the headline from The New York Times "Dolly parton, who helped fund the moderna vaccine, gets a dose of her own medicine." The country music star broke into song before she was inoculated, and urged her fans to "get out there and get your shot"

If you’re disabled and relying on someone who’s abusive for literal survival, please know you’re not alone. The lack of social supports and safety nets mean many of us get trapped in exceedingly dangerous situations. Forced to choose between help with food and meds or abuse.

You can become disabled or homeless in an instant. It just takes one accident or illness to change your life forever. It’s not a moral failing. You can’t just “try harder”. People need support, compassion and to have their basic needs met. That’s how you ensure survival.

As we recall the trauma caused by COVID in 2020, we should not forget COVID continues to harm. Many still suffer from Long COVID, people who mask are often harassed, and we haven’t scaled clean air infrastructure. If we truly acknowledge past harms, we should be working to create a better future.

If you, like me, just had a bunch of rain and your AQI didn’t go down as much as you maybe thought it would: AQI isn’t just particles, it is also a few gases. Rain is really good at removing particles, gases less so. Also if your rain came with lightning, it could’ve made more of the gases!
