We built the Universal Translator It’s not all upside, it’s not fully implemented, it’s not freely available, it’s going to cause wars and worse I still think that function alone will do more good than any prior human invention (Maybe more bad, too! My optimistic takes come with caveats)

In ideal situations, there are certain guardrails in place to protect students from exploitation by more senior academics. But there are no institutional policies or guardrails that can make it okay for a professor to become involved with a student in their own department.

Of course, with the power dynamic that exists between a professor and a student, consent is a difficult issue. A student may feel they can't say no. They may feel they can't report. They may be unable to continue their studies if things go badly, even if no harm is intended. There's no equal footing

This is part of what makes student-faculty romantic/sexual relationships so incredibly damaging for students. Any perception (however unfair) of impropriety, lack of seriousness, "trying to get ahead with sex," "creating drama," etc, can end a career, even if both parties are willing participants.

This creates absolute minefields for anyone who is a member of an underrepresented group: racism, sexism, and bigotry that you never even know about can absolutely tank your career. All it takes is for an influential senior person to say "I don't think they're very good" or "they're not serious."

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

it's very funny that while tech cos are deservedly getting the current guff for this, some of the first companies to use the dual structure were... newspapers going public in the 1960s, to preserve family control (this is why the Sulzbergers still control the NYT, and Grahams did the WaPo pre-Bezos)

People aren’t faking their disabilities, they’re faking being well. We know society hates us. We know we will be judged for using assistive devices. Many of us take years to get the courage to lean in to accommodations. Stop judging. Help us build a more inclusive world.

The Doomer can also substitute knowledge and wisdom with rhetoric, particularly the belief that the Secondary Problem is other people's failure to accept the Doomer's premises. If only the scales would fall from their eyes, they could be as harshly honest, rational and far-seeing as the Doomer.

The psychology of doomerism is that the Doomer is the smartest boy in class because he can see the Real Problem, which obviously negates the primacy of Other Problems. For totally mysterious reasons, the Real Problem is never poverty or discrimination.

Merely saying that they don't do it the way we do or that they lack qualia is dialectically inadequate. The challenge – really just the challenge from functionalism taking concrete and thus more vivid form – is to say something more. And many, including many philosophers, are struggling.

Because the problem concerns our everyday intentional notions? There is considerable pressure towards using it in describing the processing of machines with capabilities mapping onto a rich set a human capabilities the exercise of which has been described in those terms.

(And philosopher certainly struggle with it. Many I talk to start off trying to explain differences by citing capabilities that LLMs now pretty clearly have. And will is right that the tendency then goes toward either what he calls chauvinism or consciousness/qualia.)

Isn’t that disagreeing with two things he explicitly didn’t say? But, in a way, the point IS about vibes. The more capabilities previously only found in humans that they display, the more vivid and pressing the question becomes of why remaining differences matter, and for what.
