Happy Rent Freeze Day! 🏠❄️ This month, we canvassed rent-stabilized buildings in Astoria to let our neighbors know that rents are frozen on leases starting Oct. 1 (TODAY!), their rights as tenants, and how to report violations. Organized tenants mobilized to win this. It’s up to us to defend it.

We are in a unique political moment to win big for both New York’s working families, and the workers who care for our precious children. I’m ready get to work and make taxing the rich to fund childcare a top priority for our office next legislative session. 🫡✊🏽✨

Thank you @actionlabny.bsky.social for inviting my colleagues and I to the NYS Childcare Alignment Table. This powerful event convened childcare providers, workers, parents, and unions to align on a vision for universal childcare that includes dignified wages and workplace conditions!

In this moment, New York must set a positive example for the country, not contribute to democratic backsliding. Let’s reinstate the Fired Fourth and pass the Academic Freedom Protection Act!

Collective grief as remembrance. Collective action as prayer. I had the honor of observing Yom Kippur with @jfrejnyc.bsky.social @jvp.bsky.social @rabbis4ceasefire.bsky.social at Yizkor, a public ritual to remember the dead, refuse our complicity, and recommit to each other and to free Palestine.

The blatantly racist and Islamophobic campaign against @mayor.nyc.gov at a time of grief and remembrance for our city is sickening. Muslim New Yorkers are New Yorkers and Mayor Mamdani belongs at the 9/11 memorial, no matter how much bigots whine on Fox News for political clout.
Paladino on Mamdani: The same way it's a message when he goes down to 9/11–it's a message to Osama Bin laden that, look, we conquered New York.

The House’s Orwellian “Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act” threatens academic freedom and free speech by punishing colleges who boycott Israel. @juliasalazar.bsky.social and I’s Academic Freedom Protection Act in New York would actually protect workers' right to free speech.
Senator Salazar and Assemblymember Moreno Introduce Academic Freedom Protection Act

Albany, NY – State Senator Julia Salazar and Assemblymember Diana Moreno are introducing the Academic Freedom Protection Act (S.10303) to protect research, classroom discussion, and extramural and intramural speech for tenured and non-tenured staff at colleges and universities in New York.

“People have lost faith in both Democrats and Republicans...The American people are going through a crisis of democracy, and we want them to find in us, the democratic socialists, an answer and hope for the future of democracy.” I spoke with El País about Latinos Socialistas:
The ‘new era’ of Latino socialists in New York: ‘If the Democratic Party wants to lead, it must create a solution to the immigration problem’

Several of these politicians have joined the call to abolish ICE and to demand immigration reform that protects undocumented people in the US

Billionaire sob stories may be on the cover of the NY Post, but there are hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers struggling to afford rent who actually need our help. The pied-à-terre tax will generate up to $500 million in revenue for in working class New Yorkers and their kids.

I was proud to stand with @investinourny.bsky.social to affirm my support for the pied-à-terre tax! Let’s be very clear about what we’re discussing here: This tax applies to second homes valued at $5 million or more. By definition, anyone who owns a qualifying property is not struggling.

l love when a white journalist reporting on “concerns of lack of diversity” in DSA fumbles the name of the Latina elected official he interviews for the article. My name is Moreno, not Morales.
Diana Moreno, who earlier this year won the special election for the New York State Assembly seat Mamdani vacated to move to Gracie Mansion, said non-DSA Democrats should pay attention to how the group is whipping up support. Democrats, she argued, are “out of touch and losing primaries, and with a base that’s deeply angry at their inability or unwillingness to fight against the far right.”

To Moreno, democratic socialism “means healthcare, that means housing, that means childcare. That is the responsibility of government to actually guarantee for its citizens because it’s something that we need to live.”At one of the panels, Morales touted working on a bill she picked up from Mamdani in the New York State Assembly that would strip tax-exempt status from groups that do work deemed detrimental to Palestinians.

At another point, when an Ithaca, New York, council member was recalling being warned about participating in Palestinian solidarity rallies the day after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, an audience member loudly giggled multiple times.

Regarding a candidate who doesn’t describe the war in Gaza as genocide, Morales told CNN, “I don’t know if I would trust their judgment in other issues, because I think to me it’s blatant and clear that what’s happening in Palestine and has been happening for now years is considered a genocide.”

Led by State Assemblymember Diana Moreno, State Senator Julia Salazar, and New York City Councilmember Shahana HanifWe are state and local elected officials who represent diverse constituencies throughout New York State, and have witnessed the impact that Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s cruel operations have had on immigrant families and our communities.

The recent killings of two innocent immigrant fathers, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero—following the killings of Silverio Villegas González, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, Renée Good, Alex Pretti, and many others by immigration enforcement—show ICE has no regard for public safety, due process, or human decency. Since Trump’s second term began, over fifty people have died in ICE custody, and ICE agents have repeatedly fired their weapons and killed people in their vehicles. ICE has continued to detain and deport thousands of New Yorkers who have contributed to our neighborhoods for decades— separating parents from their children and shipping off high school students. This is an unsustainable degree of impunity, cruelty, and recklessness that cannot be reformed.

While Trump has escalated ICE’s operations, this did not begin with him. Past administrations have been complicit in ICE’s growing abuse of power, and the agency’s cruelty will continue regardless of who sits in the White House. We applaud recent efforts by congressional Democrats to block funding to Trump’s ICE and Border Patrol, but we must go further. We can no longer ignore the threat that ICE, which has only existed since 2002, poses to our communities and to our democracy.

For the safety of our constituents and to restore public trust and the rule of law, we call on you and all congressional Democrats to publicly support the abolition of ICE and to leverage your positions to defund and dismantle this rogue federal agency.
