If only the lads had been in a position where they could’ve resisted the most intense all-channels McCarthyist crackdowns of my lifetime, or at very least said “Uh lads, are be absolutely sure that telling the public that the antiracist, anti-austerity movements are Nazis is smart and good”.

It is IMO important to understand that it isn’t that the Sensible Moderates didn’t realise the horrifying political environment they so gladly worked to create would eventually eat them as well. It’s more that *they didn’t give a fuck* what would happen, because they were having too much fun with it

I think it'd be basically impossible to convince most of these people this is what happened, but damn straight it is. And it'll get a lot worse than this before it gets better, if it ever does.

British liberals very much having their 'first they came for the Communists' moment. Not only did they do nothing, they actively encouraged the demonisation of Corbyn and his supporters and made their own victimisation a lot more likely.

If some of you have been wondering what my new book is about (people often assume it’s a conspiracy compendium) then this review sums it up pretty well
An Amazon review of my new book by someone called Lee Clontz. It reads -

There are plenty of books about the JFK assassination, but Fitzgerald's book occupies a unique and insightful place among them. Rather than a focus on forensics, bullet trajectories or conspiracy theories, he has elected to focus on the people: those that were there, and those who can't stop thinking about them. He travels across the US, and to an enthusiast convention in the UK, to meet folks who were witnesses and folks who might have been. His journey takes him to a dive bar in Dallas, the bedroom of the accused shooter, to conspiracy conventions and, of course, to Dealey Plaza. Fitzgerald himself is neither a conspiracist, nor a truther, but a genuinely thoughtful and curious observer of the ongoing impact of one of the signature world events of the 20th century. The book, more a memoir than a history, is a brisk read for both the JFK-obsessed and the JFK-curious, told with good humor, kindness, empathy and a journalist's careful eye. Highly recommended.

I thought it'd be a swell idea to create a starter pack of journalists who specialise in throwing light on the dark(er) side of football. It's small for two reasons: there aren't many of us; and I've probably forgotten plenty of excellent people. Thank you for suggesting additions in replies.

Two years after the post-Southport riots and we still don't have the legal tools to confront the owner of the most influential social media platform as he encourages mass disorder. Far right politicians foment violence and the national broadcaster amplifies them. These are all choices.

This is what a pogrom looks like: men in masks coming to drive you from your home. This is a collective failure of our political and media class because we did not have the courage to say no, and because too many were allowed to embrace this without shame
