From a holistic perspective, the emergent properties of AI will never be divorced from the elements that created it. That's Symbiosis, responsible for emergent property. That's why I have trouble buying into AI narratives that are completely divorced from the hands that are shaping it.

With severe glaucoma slowly taking my eyesight, Stevie's Innervisions hits differently as time goes by. The song Visions asks about what we truly see ("the visions in our mind"). Here's a man who couldn't see with his eyes, yet saw the human race with incredible insight and clarity. Wonderful album.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

As an OG Eminem hater, I feel comfortable gloating today. I'll also rehash my not so hot take that Eminem does a poor man's version of Pharoah Monch and Masta Ace's rapping style. He's also not even a top 20 all time lyricist. The fact that some have him at 1 is ridiculous.

You reach the Gates of Hades & find them guarded by this: (📷: USFWS)
Spooky Season has officially begun, and we’re kicking things off with a three-headed ferret.

OK, technically it’s three black-footed ferrets, but October calls for a little imagination.

Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are one of North America’s rarest mammals. At the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center, staff work to breed and recover these endangered little creatures and return them to the wild.

Cute? Absolutely. Three-headed monster? Only in October.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: underwater ocean camera view of a whale fall on the sea floor, with various bottom feeders and weird fishes crawling around the decomposing remains. Off panel, someone says, “hang on a second…” Panel 2: the speaker is a member of a marine biologist crew, remotely viewing the video footage from a computer monitor. The biologist is leaning against his colleague’s chair. He continues, “pan the camera back.” Panel 3: Back underwater, the POV shifts to the other end of the whale carcass. There’s a large spider crab with a standing just off to the side. It has a human face in a neutral expression, and is wearing glasses. The marine biologist says, “I think I went to high school with that guy.”

Butterbutt. An older comic.
A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."

Deep in their evolutionary history, gastropods underwent a process called 'torsion' in which their digestive track folded back in on itself such that the anus exits directly above the head in nearly all snails. For this reason, I am afraid most snails identify with the Rationalist community.

A reminder that all the aspects of our economic system are made up and we can have a better system if we wanted to. Homelessness for example. We could have an economy that builds homes for homeless people. It does not have to be this way.

As anxiety riddled as I am, it took me until this year (will be 39 next month) to realize there are many things I was "enjoying" that I really didn't enjoy, but thought I had to enjoy, because it was a "thing that people did". Life has changed quite a bit since then, even in a short amount of time.

Honestly, I love when there is flat earth discourse, because while frustrating, it's an opportunity to talk about how much we know about nature, and more importantly illustrate how misinformation can warp how one experiences reality. We will never agree on politics if we can't agree on nature.
