Portland, do you feel any lighter? Because today we lost about 40,000 lbs of asphalt, thanks to Portland Clean Energy Fund's student climate projects! Laurelhurst students used prybars, hard work, and teamwork to depave the way for new trees to shade their south-facing classrooms 🌳

East Portland has dozens of transit stops with inadequate shade where a version of this design could both absorb stormwater in winter and help provide cooling in summer. Portland summers would require a drought tolerant planting design, but where there's a will there's a way!

A slide from Mobycon about how we could build a safe bidirectional greenway on SE 7th from Sandy to Hawthorne. Planted buffers between bikes and cars + Euro-style raised bikeways can cancel out risk associated with bidirectional crossings on busier streets. No excuses PDX, let's get bidirectional!
Bidirectional safety countermeasures

Improve sight lines, increase crossing setbacks, shorten crossing distances, reduce turning speeds, raise site street crossings, eliminate or consolidate conflict points, provide signal protection where appropriate, apply protected intersection geometry at signals, reinforce priority through pavement design.

Subject: A Better West Burnside

Dear Mayor Wilson, Council Vice President Clark, Councilors Green and Zimmerman, and PBOT Director Williams:

West Burnside has the potential to be a great street. It lies at the heart of our city, linking together neighborhoods as diverse as Old Town, Chinatown, Downtown, the Pearl District, Goose Hollow, and the Northwest District. It connects several major local and tourist destinations, including the Portland Saturday Market, Ankeny Alley and Voodoo Donuts, the Crystal Ballroom, Providence Park, and numerous theaters, bars, and restaurants. It is also the location of the busiest pedestrian intersection in Portland, right in front of Powell's Books on Burnside at 10th Avenue.
The bad news is that West Burnside is currently not living up to its potential. The sidewalks are narrow, the traffic is fast, the crossings are dangerous, and the bus stops are difficult to access -- all characteristics that make the street unpleasant to walk along and that contribute to the street's designation as a High Crash Corridor. The good news is that we have the chance to fix this and to make Burnside the vibrant destination that it should be. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is planning on repaving Burnside, which is the ideal time to add improvements that would enhance both the economic vitality and the safety of the street. This is especially true given the future Burnside Bridge reconstruction.

Currently, PBOT is pl…Letter on East Burnside that says, "Strong Towns PDX – Bike Loud – Oregon Walks – Le Monde Parents Community – Better Block PDX

Subject: A Safer East Burnside

Dear Mayor Wilson, Councilors Koyama Lane, Morillo, and Novick, and PBOT Director Williams:

Last Monday, on East Burnside Street at 24th Avenue, a community member riding a motorcycle was killed by a driver while doing something we all do every day: using our streets. We are saddened by the loss of life on our street, but we are not surprised, because we have first-hand experience of how dangerous this stretch of East Burnside is for our community. We want to see Inner East Burnside become a thriving neighborhood main street where locals and visitors alike want to spend time and patronize local businesses.

East Burnside from 16th to 30th Avenues has the potential to be a great main street. It lies at the intersection of two vibrant inner-city neighborhoods, Buckman on the south side and Kerns on the north side.
Local businesses line the street, including restaurants, coffee shops, medical and veterinary offices, a grocery store, a dance studio, a movie theater, and much more.
Four schools are located either directly on or within three blocks of the stretch of East Burnside between 16th and 30th, including Buckman Elementary School, Da Vinci Arts Middle School, Le Monde French Immersion K-8 School, and Central Catholic High School.
Bus stops line East Burnside, which is served by TriMet Bus 20, one of the most heavily ridden routes in the system.
Many neighbors live in a variety of housing types along the street, ranging from large multi-story apartment buildings to duplexes and single-family homes.

Unfortunately, East Burnside acts as a dangerous barrier between the Buckman and Kerns neighborhoods rather than as…
