Oh, and Boston? The rest of the region would love it if you stopped getting finite 8-figure Federal grants that could have funded other sustainable transpo priorities in the region, and then repeatedly shitting the bed.

Riders 8 to 80ish braved the drizzle to commemorate the completion of the Broadway bike lanes. Schools, day cares, museums, and multiple neighborhoods now benefit from better pedestrian crossings, signage, and protected micromobility travel. Thank you to the many who spoke up over the years.

Pretty much every country outside of the United States got the memo that to avoid being held hostage by a dictator, they gotta wean themselves off of fossil fuels. And no, I don't think Democrats got the memo either, given how many have sandbagged the most basic electrified public transit projects

What WON’T the modifications do? Dissuaded a driver from running a red light and hitting things, which we all keep hearing is what happened to the scooter rider.

There was already a bike lane there. There were no bike lane extension markings through the intersection. The tape put them in, and put in offsets. Why would you offset bicyclists from cars through an intersection?

Riding contraflow illegally is extremely common on this route. The city could post signs legalizing it and markings reinforcing it — thus giving motorists a heads-up — as they have on a few other streets. @votejivan.bsky.social even got a policy order passed, directing a study. Nothing yet.

Of particular note for this story: in 2024, @MassDOT widened the roadway near the scene of this homicide. In the 2 years since that project's completion, the number of crashes on Damon Road was nearly double what it was in the two years before the widening project:
A bar chart labeled "crashes on Northampton's Damon Road before and after MassDOT's Damon Road widening project, according to MassDOT's IMPACT database." The chart shows two columns: to the left, a much shorter column for "pre-construction, 7/1/2017 - 9/1/2019", with 70 non-injury crashes and a smaller red section representing 16 injury-causing crashes for a total of 86. To the left is a much taller column labelled "post-construction, 7/1/2024 - 9/1/2026" with 118 non-injury crashes and 30 injury crashes for a total of 148.

Based on what we’ve heard from you, we’re working to develop a design that improves everyday safety. Our goals are to:

Make it safer and easier to cross the street

This is good bike parking. It has angular tubing, which prevents the quiet use of pipe cutters for theft. The racks are also spaced far enough apart to allow for larger bikes to be parked with room for the rider to maneuver while on foot. Also, this is entrance-adjacent to the building.

Zero occupancy vehicles (ZOV), aka empty robots, are being deployed by the hundreds per city/metro only until they can deploy them by the millions. Cities will need ZOV restrictions/caps else ZOV will dominate downtowns. Been ~obvious since Google got serious ~2014. And when they all brick at once.

More 'why haven't we been doing this for the past 50 years' recommendations. Detecting cyclists/pedestrians/VRUs in blind spots was among the top rationales for gifting 5 GHz of public bandwidth to the auto industry for radar >decade ago, which has mostly used it to protect and comfort car drivers.

Breadon also revealed that, even as the City Council president, she can’t get her calls returned from the Boston Transportation Department’s current leadership.

“Over the past four months I’ve sent five separate emails to the streets cabinet, asking for the re-installation of bike lane buffers in our neighborhood,” said Breadon. “I have yet to receive a response. This status quo is unacceptable.”

A theme here is that if a person inside city government intervenes on behalf of a restaurant losing parking spots or a random driver getting a parking ticket, that's seen as constituent services. If another government insider works on behalf of keeping people alive, that's seen as advocacy.

The basic reality of Boston transit is that the city wasn't built for cars, there's no way to build it so that it's convenient to drive anywhere, most people would not want that in the first place, and the inability to confront any of these facts on the part of multiple parties is killing people.
