A new study from Flanders, Belgium found that social media users really do learn true things about current events from political content—but that the people doing most of the talking are, on average, less informed than those staying quiet. Tim Bernard on what that means for democracy.

People really do learn about politcs on social media says a new study from Belgium, but the loudest voices are often not the most objective, writes Tim Bernard.

Academic institutions are terrible at valuing their people. I asked Columbia for a raise and was told I would need an offer from another institution. I got one from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and Columbia responded with a 40% raise and a bunch of other things. I left for Hawaiʻi anyway.

Could the "LLMs can't do anything" crowd and the "LLMs can do everything" crowd go somewhere private to yell at each other so the rest of us can have a normal "this new tech can do things previous tech couldn't but is limited in various ways, let's figure out best uses and regulations" conversation?

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

A point @annakornbluh.bsky.social has frequently made about labor intensification is that colleges cut support staff, offload essential work that support staff did onto faculty, then wonder why faculty aren’t being as “productive.” What once took our Asst. Dir. an hour, easily takes me twice that.
