Some thoughts on War on Iran discourse.

X post reading: “Anecdotal “Iran protesters are chanting ‘death to the regime’; they’ll greet us as liberators!” story time:

My ex-husband was born in Iran to a communist / leftist secular family that participated in the 1979 revolution against Shah Pahlavi — and who were among the first victims of Khomeini’s Islamic Republic consolidation purge.

At 10 years old, he was arrested and sent to prison for burning a photo of Khomeini and chanting ‘marg bar khomeini.”

His older brother’s exposure to nationalist indoctrination in schools was sufficient to convince him that he needed to participate in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war — as a child soldier sent to the frontlines, given a ‘key to heaven’ to be worn around his neck and told that should he die, he would go straight to paradise and feel no pain.

Both of them, as well as their extended family, despise the Islamic Republic and the majority of members are either atheists, Zoroastrians, or Christian converts.

But the moment Western military intervention is raised in a discussion, they take on a “no one talks shit on my family but me” stance and default to invoking BOTH Persian nationalism (“7000 years of civilization,” etc) AND Iranian Shia nationalism (“Ya Ali, Iran is the liberator and leader of all Muslims” / “the road to Al Quds — Jerusalem — is through Karbala,” etc).

Granted, I’m much more versed on the Arab world in terms of Middle Eastern geopolitics — and definitely NOT an Iran expert, but lately, my mind circles back to these memories more and more as the War on Iran Discourse keeps raging.”
