Halvemaansteeg, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. Today, a cycle only street crossing a tram only street.
Top, 1979, black and white: a busy road junction with a taxi in the foreground, a van and other cars queued behind it, and a cyclist among pedestrians crossing on the left. A "Politie" police station sits on the corner.

Bottom, today, in colour: the same junction, now a cycle street with no cars. A man and a young girl cycle away from the camera past bollards and traffic cones, with people walking and pulling suitcases on the paths either side.

Then-and-now comparison of Eerste van der Helststraat in Amsterdam. Top, 1978, black and white: a street jammed with cars, including a van, an Opel estate and a saloon, parked and queuing both sides. A cyclist threads between the traffic in the middle distance.

Bottom, today, in colour: the same street, now a tree-lined pedestrian zone with no cars at all. Tall leafy trees arch over the brick paving, and the street is busy with people walking, including a family with children, past café terraces and market stalls under the shopfronts.

Floating bus stops are a simple way to make busy streets work better for everyone. Buses do not get held up by cyclists, while people cycling get a continuous, protected route instead of being forced into traffic. Safer cycling, quicker bus journeys and streets that work for people.

Nobody who wants to travel sustainably by train should be prevented from doing so because it's cheaper to drive or fly. Here's what we heard from one commuter this week. We're campaigning for rail fares to be fair and affordable.
A commuter from Cumbria says, "It costs me £13.50 for a 15-minute train ride to work, which isn't much different to driving my diesel van and paying to park. I'd prefer to take the train, but it's working out quite a lot of money!"
