The whole public health and public service sector needs to dial back corporatization and dressing up as businesses. This includes state and local health departments that use terms like “customers” and “business needs.” It’s insidious and has been worsening for years in public service and nonprofits.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

Since there are so many asymptomatic cases, is there any test or other way to tell if you’ve had such a case? And for how long after would it be detectable, if so?

They’re also setting up some of the left to pivot from those warnings to having to explain the issues with alarmism over the wrong parts. Which is important, but I worry to the general public hearing it indirectly, the message sounds like reassurance about AI. It feels like a no-win redirect trap.

I love our tiny, local independent movie house where the owner chats about a movie before it starts and there are weekly cheap ticket nights. We decided we’d rather not battle over IMAX tickets (followed by a 10-year journey home fighting monsters) or, worse, sit through an hour of AMC ads/previews.

Guantanamo is a sobering reminder of how hard it is to undo even one horror of an evil administration. When people talk about how the next president (if there is one) should just undo everything the Trump regime is building or destroying, I remember Obama’s confidence that he’d close Guantanamo.

THREAD. 3 & 1/4 years ago, with no warning, a brilliant orange farm cat wandered over from the draughty barn where he'd been living, in rural Cornwall, & decided he wanted to live with us instead. We decided to call him Jim. This is the first photo I took of him, on that night: December 1st 2022
As you can see here, right from the very first day he entered our house, Jim found great difficulty in getting settled and making the environment his own.

Totally. And that capitalism fuels the impossible number of tasks—then sells solutions to the problems it fuels. Sometimes “remembering is a task” helps me check something off my list when it crosses my mind, because otherwise I have to repeat the (anxiety-provoking) remembering task again later.

Debs @debsgardner.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
I have ADHD and keep lists. They’re helpful and can provoke anxiety, but it’s better than not having tasks written down. Remembering a task is also a task, and writing it down helps me manage that. Realistically, it helps me to realize to-do lists are usually longer than we have capacity to handle.

Admirable clarity @science.org
The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story

My understanding is that although carbon capture of NEW emissions has all the problems this covers, some carbon removal would be needed even if we stopped all emissions today—due to EXISTING levels. How can we keep that nuance so we don’t throw out carbon removal with the carbon-capture bathwater?

Polls at such an early stage feel less about viability than about name recognition, media attention, and social media algorithm promotion, right? Considering some drivers of those three factors, I cringe at poll-related framing this far out. It can also be self-fulfilling—which isn’t always good.
