If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via study that still underestimates climate cost. This isn’t about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath

Op-Ed: Building Toward a Greener, Housing-Abundant Seattle
Housing growth and tree canopy growth can go hand in hand. In fact, a closer look at Seattle's recent history shows they often do. Here's how to build on that trend.

Did you know that the city doesn’t maintain the flowers in any of these traffic-calming planters and instead relies on volunteers? And if the people who initially agreed to take care of them give up, then the city just lets the plants go to seed or removes them? Austerity in action.
A concrete planter with a traffic calming sign on the outside of it and flowers in it?

Angus: It’s like having to negotiate with Al Capone in his syphilitic period. You want to shut down the bridge? Go ahead. Every day, 1,500 nurses from Canada go to help keep Detroit’s health care system going. I personally think those nurses should be working in Canada.

This isn’t about convicting Don Lemon. It’s unlikely that will happen. It’s about intimidating journalists & making them censure themselves out of fear of consequences. It’s about eroding the free press because the administration can’t afford the criticism.

Did you know that in Canada, if a budget doesn’t pass the government doesn’t shut down? Federal workers aren’t furloughed. Funding for social services doesn’t dry up. Failure to pass a budget triggers an election. It puts the politicians jobs on the line. They get the budget passed.

When urbanists take pictures of a Paris street (like Rue de Rivoli) showing all the people on bikes now taking advantage of protected infrastructure, it’s not just because we “like bikes.” It’s because we’re picturing the gridlock if they were driving cars. And the public cost, pollution, noise…
