i am glad to see Charles is bringing Reznikoff’s TESTIMONY to more readers. it’s a landmark work of documentary poetry that draws on courtroom records from USA at end of 19th/start of 20th C. it won’t be like much you have read before

Jeff Parker knows. Playing music is fun but intentionally making music you want to listen to is infinitely more gratifying.
Jeff Parker: It feels a bit weird to say because you hear a lot of artists where they made something and they don't listen to it, they move on. All my records, I pore over them pretty hard, and I want myself to be able to like them. I want it to be something that I want to listen to. That's why I haven't made that many records, because I like my records. I like to listen to them. I don't listen to them that often, but when I do, I like to look at them and be proud of the work that I've done.

"Absolute Elsewhere" by Blood Incantation just became my favorite album of all time (or at least this Monday). What a beautiful, amazing record! The music really sounds just like the cover looks--perfect match.
The cover of the album "Absolute Elsewhere" by Blood Incantation. Pyramids on some crazy looking planet with the band's name in crazy, unreadable metal font. Very cosmic.

I’m reading a collection of Joyce Carol Oates crime novels, but was self-conscious about having the lurid pulpy pinup cover at my daughter’s jujitsu class, so I had her draw a new one. Ewok in a top hat works much better.
Joyce Carol Oates novel entitled Double trouble. The cover is a child’s drawing of an Ewok in a top hat.

Thank you Esmé O'Keefe for the lovely review of my translation of Mathias Énard's PERFECTING THE SHOT! "It is to Mandell’s credit that her translation keeps pace with the breathlessness of Énard’s writhing prose." Thank you for mentioning the translation! www.ft.com/content/c228...

Perfecting the Shot — an immersive view of the act of killing
Mathias Énard’s dive into the psyche of a teenage sniper verges on the claustrophobic — but therein lies the power of this expertly translated French novel

there are some insane Dinosaur Jr rankings on this planet, man, so for the record (new album has at least two great songs, but too early to rank): 1. Where You Been 2. Bug 3.. You're Living All Over Me 4. Green Mind 5. Hand It Over (for "Alone") or maybe Farm (for "Said the People")

Where You Been is a my favorite of theirs--such an incredible album. This and Green Mind were personality defining albums for me in high school (which I realize was maybe not good!). (And my ranking would be the same with maybe Bug/You're Living swapped).

***new scan from the negative*** Made in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga, HALF-COCKED follows a group of kids who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band in order to stay on the road. The film features Ian Svenonius and members of Rodan and The Grifters, playing versions of themselves. With music by Unwound, Slant 6, Freakwater, Versus, Polvo, Smog, Helium and others. After completing the film Hawley and Galinsky took the film on tour showing it rock clubs across the US and Europe. “It doesn’t seem too bold to say Half-Cocked is an Easy Rider for the 90’s and deserves as much attention.”-Eric Gladstone, ALTERNATIVE PRESS “Bracing in it’s dry humor and first hand accuracy”-VARIETY “Hawley and Galinsky know how to make pictures shudder with feeling”- MANOHLA DARGIS "Life among young bohos and would-be rockers gets a strikingly true-to-life treatment in the deadpan road movie "Half-Cocked." Co-creators Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky are indie-rock scene veterans, experience that shows in every frame. While the no-budgeter may be too insiderish and understated for the Generation X masses, its wry comic veracity could score a bull's-eye with hip college auds."- GODFREY CHESHIRE, VARIETY This raw and moody drama from 1994, by the husband-and-wife team of Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky (they co-wrote, she directed and edited, and he photographed, in appealingly grainy black-and-white), captures a moment of grungy charm, when independent art-rock scenes were new and resolutely local. A quintet living in a ramshackle house in Louisville gets a gig at a club, but the show turns sour when the vain, pretentious glam-punk Otis (Ian Svenonius) goes onstage and smacks Tara (Tara Jane O’Neil), the quintet’s spiritual leader—and his sister—for spoiling his encore. In revenge, Tara steals his van and equipment and drives the rest of the band to Chattanooga, where they scuffle along in fear and desperation. Though the aesthetic is rough-and-ready, Hawley is a sincere and sensitive storyteller who brings the characters to life with subtle, oblique touches that show who they are without saying too much about them. Casting highly regarded indie rockers and filling the soundtrack with their songs, Hawley movingly roots their music in a way of life as well as in the grimy urban landscapes they inhabit. — Richard Brody -New Yorker
