I am just utterly heartbroken. Bend is not a big city. We probably all know someone or someone that knows someone

It's pretty surreal to have it happen where you live. Bend's not a big city and ... many of us will probably find out that we know one of the families or know someone who does. I'm heartbroken

It's heartbreaking to just scroll through everything like it's not an awful terrible day, but then you think... it's just normal here in the US

The existence of moving chains has been documented in multiple cities across different countries using increasingly fine-grained and sophisticated data. The relationship between housing supply, demand, and rent growth is well known. Denying these phenomena is quackery.

This article quotes a sociology professor, a lawyer, and an architect who reject the notion that housing prices are set by supply and demand and do not believe that building more homes reduces rents. It is the housing policy equivalent of platforming climate change deniers.

Trump's biggest selling point to voters is that he removed the stigma of being anti-social and turned it into a symbol of power. The most important thing we can do as ordinary people is putting the stigma back.

One of the interesting things about housing reform is that it sometimes happens in places you wouldn't think of first. Spokane seems to be doing a great job and it's worth looking at what they've done and how it's working:

No US city has listed in the top 30 Cycling cities. When US engineers do “study tours” of other US cities, they’re not learning best practices. Far from it. We need to either: 1. Hire more foreign traffic engineers 2. Send more of our engineers abroad to learn from the best

Tesla's whole approach to driving automation is so profoundly messed up that even this new name "Tesla Assisted Driving" is no more accurate than the outgoing "Full Self-Driving" name. That's because it's not assistive. It literally doesn't assist the driver. If anything, the driver assists it.

I love how widely YIMBYism is being adopted by high profile Dems such as Mamdani and Talarico. But I'm sad that these people can't follow up with "And look how well those policies have worked in California." We really need to clean up our own Democratic Party.

The main difference I’ve noticed between West Coast NIMBYs and East Coast NIMBYs is that the former will tell you that they’re worried about gentrification, overpopulation and out of control capitalism, and the latter will just say the thing.

I've seen a lot of people criticise the handful of Dems who've triangulated on trans rights who also grudgingly say that perhaps it's necessary to win. I think this illustrates neatly why I've never found that argument persuasive. Transphobia is a luxury issue, and these are *very* lean times.
