Hello fellow Labour enthusiasts and Andy Burnham lovers, I know it's a hassle, but while the conference is going on, Andy has asked me to just pop round and make sure everything is in order with your wallets. I'm sure it is, but if you could have them ready for inspection that would be great.

My wife got tickets to see Noam Shuster Eliassi for her mum's birthday yesterday. I didn't know much about her and was bracing myself for some 'liberal' Zionist nonsense but she's very good - funny but also very clear on the limits of 'dialogue' etc

This was even better than the one on Monday - the 'pipes in particular were really punching through. Sourdure beforehand was also terrific. Surprise celebrity in the audience: comedian Frank Skinner.

The new Omertà album came through too late for the forthcoming column, but it'll be in the next one. It's a beauty, their dreamiest and most fluid to date. Features Jérémie Sauvage (France/La Tène) on bass and Société Étrange's Jonathan Grandcollot on drums. zamzamrec.bandcamp.com/album/mes-bl...

Thanks to the "legitimate concerns" paradigm, we have a national consensus that migrants (you know which specific ones) are a problem. More migrants = bad, fewer migrants = good. In that context, "anti-migrant protestor" isn't even neutral language to describe this fascist thug. It is *positive*.

A friend just sent me this, from a guide to Britain. Guess the year!
Sometimes, particularly in the more inward parts of industrial Britain, you might have to dig deeper for a welcome, especially in those no-nonsense pubs where something of the old division of the sexes still holds sway. In such places, the "spit and sawdust" public bar is where working men can bond over a pint or two; the plusher saloon bar, with a separate entrance, is the preferred haunt of couples and women. In many towns and cities, and especially in areas with a younger population, the traditional pub faces a challenge from the contemporary bar and café-bar.

I'm reading this at the moment, very much enjoying the way Anderson starts out saying that he's going to try to avoid rock autobiography clichés and then a few chapters later it's all 'fame, she is a mercurial mistress...'

Not trying to start a Hit 'Em thing here but I did have a dream last night that I was in a (British/American? Unclear) coastal town and the young people were all listening to two types of music. One of these was called 'Tô' and it featured quite slow, sparse breakbeats and lots of synth trumpet.
