Overlooked in discussions of Manchester City penalties are the executives and accountants who actually cheated. I read that club representatives intentionally lied during the investigation. Their names should be part of the furor prior to their lifetime bans from English football.

My qualifications speak for themselves.
Screenshot of a Spotify Year-end Wrap-up showing that my top artist of the year was Sting. The text emphasizes that I placed among the elite Sting listeners, the top 0.1%. In the image accompanying the acknowledgement, Sting's dressed in black and stood in a stone archway. A black iron gate blocks the archway behind him. His hands rest on either side of the archway, relaxed but suitably Christ-like.

The less your RPG's GMing advice references and leverages your game's rules, the less game design you've done.

RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING isn't getting enough credit for its screenplay. All of its characters and stories work like spinning tops in reverse: wobbling before rising perfectly onto their tips. The dialog has the same baroque pleasures of a Charles Portis novel.

A game like MCDM's Crows buries its GM dependency. "Player skill" really means "GM skill" in an RPG with that much GM authority. Players can't have brilliant, ingenious ideas of the GM can't or won't support them. Like all RPGs, the proof is in the book's GMing advice.

Amused to see François Vatel valorized in the new Bourdain movie by Bourdain's mentor. Vatel famously ran himself through with a sword over the lateness of a seafood delivery intended for a 2,000-person banquet honoring Louis XIV. I first learned of Vatel via this quotation.
"If Vatel can ruin Louis XIV’s dinner by dying, then Vatel is too necessary for either the prince’s or the king’s honor to bear. The best servant can never be truly indispensable."

Nolan's Odyssey isn't an interpretation in the same way that Clueless interprets Emma nor does it interpret the text like Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet. It's maybe closer to Fennell's "Wuthering Heights." The missing quotation marks might have spared us some angst.

We reward celebrities for their goodness and decency so long as it's effortless. Effortlessness is inherent, something you are, not something you chose. Both Hathaway and John Cena are transparently decent. It shifts the gap between us from aspirational to moral. We could be like them if we tried.

As a patron of MCDM, I have a window into their encouraging and frustrating RPG scenario design process. The process itself is laudable, but it mistakenly believes that innovation in RPG scenario design will come from applying video game design principles to a medium they aren't suited for.

There absolutely was a time when people did play differently because they bought a different RPG book. Maybe not always successfully, but we tried our best.
Why Bother

Cultures of play help us see what's happening at the table beyond the game someone picked. Folks don't just play differently because they bought a different book. They bring different habits, expectations, and ideas about what the whole thing is even for.
