these are our pianos, not theirs! I know this stuff can feel secondary with all of the immediate pain this admin causes, but in the face of such personalism, it also feels important to assert the democratic principle that these cultural inheritances don't belong to the president, they belong to us

Contrary to billing change over time as our beat, as a historian I'm here to tell you that violence against women is an absolute constant. Not generations but centuries of activism & policies have made that violence only somewhat more public. Our daily news reminds us how and why.

53 years ago, hip-hop was born at a back-to-school party in the Bronx. Now, the Bronx School of Hip Hop is preparing a new generation of artists to shape what comes next. I sat down with Nas to talk about the past, present, and future of hip-hop in NYC — from the turntables to our classrooms.

(With last Reskeet in mind.) A friend from high school recently asked for a playlist of “my” ‘80s music. I sent him this old show of all 1982 releases, stuff I listened to at the time and stuff not on my radar until later.

Thinking about "for you," as marketing and gatekeeping. Some of the best experience you can have with art is with stuff that's not made to appeal to you, affirm you, or sell you something. Let art make you forget yourself and see someone else.

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now

As someone else noted (sorry, can’t find it now) it really feels like there was a coordinated campaign to boost Schmitt today, with the Axios piece floating him as Vance’s VP setting up his big gotcha attempt at the hearing. They just ignored the fuckup and moved to stage three congratulating him.

Just a reminder that this is the same Sen. Schmitt who repeatedly claimed that Chief Judge Boasberg was receiving a disproportionate share of Trump-related cases because he confused the D.C. Superior Court (which has 62 judges) with the D.C. district court (which has 15).

The difference between books 1 and 2 of the Sakamoto memoir is astonishing. Book 1 is almost flippant, sketchy, races through decades at an alarming rate. Book 2 is the polar opposite, deep, thoughtful, insightful, detailed. The juxtaposition works perfectly, book 2 is deeply brilliant & moving.
Cover of the hardback copy of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s memoir ‘Music sets you free’. Also a pint of beer.

My only contribution to the song-about-Texas discourse is to note that I’ve thought of the ending of “Lecture on Nothing” a couple dozen times today.
Last lines of John Cage’s “Lecture on Nothing. Apologies that this cut and paste will inevitably be unable to reproduce his spacing:

The reason they've no they have recordings
music in Texas in Texas.
Remove the records from Texas and someone
will learn to sing
Everybody
has a song
which is
no
song at all :
it is a process
of singing
and when you sing you are
where you are
All I know about method is that when I am not working I sometimes
think I know something, but when I am working, it is quite clear that I know nothing.

I was surprised by that detail and can’t tell whether it meant the training regimen was unpaid or if the races were, which wasn’t my understanding. No question the employers are exploitative. But I do know her primary motivator was the thrill of it all. She knew she was good at it.
