💥 Our paper is now out in Political Behavior - I'm very happy about it! We show how confrontational protest affects different dimensions of public opinion compared to demonstrative protest 👇 I also talked to ZEIT Online about our pre-print & the context a while ago: www.zeit.de/gesellschaft...

3. V good point. For me, protest can shift policy in the long term, but it is hard to show in such studies. But one important mechanism would travel through public policy support, which remains key. The 2019 EP elections and the FFF movement are a good case (again, difficult to show). 3/4

Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
2. Conceptually, we wanted to substantively differentiate btw. confrontational & violent prot. Violent climate protest is not relevant in Germany in the last decades (rather a 80s-90s phenomenon). So, yes, confrontational remains a peaceful protest form but with diff. effects on mov support. 2/4

Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Good points! 1. I'd say we connect to work by @owasow.bsky.social in that confrontational seems more similar to demonstrative protest than to violent prot., especially concerning effects on public policy support. 1/4
120
Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Our study cannot speak to that. But political elites often claim that confrontational climate protests generate a backlash in public support for climate action. Our results can inform them that this is not the case. IDK if that would change mechanisms about restricting such rights.
110
Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
However, our starting point was that confrontative protest is detrimental to the cause -- as many scholars, politicians, and commentators claim. This is not the case.
100
Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
In the short term, our results do not show that, no. But at the end of the article, we discuss how this could play out in the mid/long term. For example, in combination with demonstrative protest, which has been shown to shift public opinion in other studies.
100
Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
That's a good idea, e.g., to think about capturing donations to the movement and the overall cause, perhaps. We did not include such a support dimension. I wonder if it would trigger floor effects: overall, not many people materially support (climate/environ.) protest movs. in the population.
110
Daniel Saldivia Gonzatti @dasalgon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026

The NYT article is behind a paywall. Our paper in Political Behavior is fully open access. Wrt your question: we set up a survey experiment w. randomized group assignment; so, absolute differences btwn groups are interpreted as driven by the protest treatment. + on that & the measure in the paper

Policy Brief
Wirksam gegen RechtsauBen
Eine systematische Analyse zivilgesellschaftlicher
Strategien gegen die extreme Rechte
Christin Janicke
Hans Jonas Gunzelmann
Teresa Volker
Swen Hutter
nete Typen identifiziert: 1. organisationale Strategien, 2. Netzwerkarbeit, 3. politische
Bildung, 4. Proteste und 5. Offentlichkeitsarbeit.
