I went to an Ivy, had the benefit of working in elite institutions. But then the 21st century arrived & I watched a confluence of media, technology, global trade & migration shock our already compromised democracy and that is why in today's essay I wrote about the end of The Great Awokening.

“Mission Accomplished”- devastating another storied institution of the national media in a time of declining trust, social media rise and polarization is a big win for the populist right.

The word research does not appear once and that in some sense is the political problem universities face in the UK. This is a league table from the left/liberal newspaper of choice:

One of my big academic rules: only write papers you really care about on topics you really care about. I try to follow this rule 99% of the time. This paper is one of the best examples of that, and I’m stoked it’s one step closer to being in the world. We’ve corrected proofs & you’ll have it soon!

Opinion | The Greatest Story Dolly Parton Ever Wrote Was Herself (Gift Article)
She didn’t see herself as a saint; she identified as something we needed even more: a writer.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Dolly Parton's voice was angelic not because it possessed some kind of divine perfection or unattainable beauty, but because it seemed to be personally invested in the well-being of anyone and everyone who listened to it, illuminated from within with an almost otherworldly benevolence.

Dolly Parton Had the Voice, and Concerns, of an Earth Angel
Parton gave hopeful expression to songs she wrote about the hard times and hard-won triumphs of her life.

An important reminder that legal threats to newspapers are often not about challenging the actual veracity of claims but about scaring people off particular topics by raising the cost. Both in the US and the UK. Good for Adam in acting when NYT wouldn't. He has brought receipts.

It's me, a Telegraph columnist, taking a break screaming bloody murder about fairness in the women's sports I wouldn't be caught dead watching to wax lyrical about academic integrity in sociology, a field I consider to be fake, at institutions I consider to be communist indoctrination centers.

This is an excellent post that decimates the idea that there is a Truth Police out there actively monitoring bad faith academic work. As most academics and especially journal editors know, a system built on assuming good faith will always struggle against LaCour type fabulists.

There are 2 constraints on academics: the cuts in funding & restrictions on how universities manage their finances combined with a growing demand for more reporting of how they spend the monies. The 1st restricts the pie, the 2nd raises bureaucratic costs. Both stem from a deep suspicion of academia

if there’s anything I would want to drill into the public consciousness it’s that there are almost always like a dozen ways to approach any given problem and some of them will be more effective than others and we have to stop acting like the questions around it are against fixing the issue

one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon

I wouldn’t be surprised if it made Nolan’s week. She took him seriously, which is the real capital. Fans never get that. It’s also why Beyonce can’t achieve the canonization she so desperately craves — her fans shielding her from precisely the kind of criticism that would elevate her work.

Studies of Indian history have rarely contended with role of Native American tribes in the South of India. The Aditaw and Droki tribes are thought have been reason the eponym "adi dravidas" emerged as a rallying cry amongst the non brahman castes of India, harkening to a time prior to the Saracens

BJP as a credible national party emerged on twin issues in the early 90s- Mandal realigned the electorate against caste-based affirmative action policies in education making BJP a dominant force among upper castes, & Mandir- the issue of a Ram temple that led to a religious realignment
