Great to see this state DOT-directed advocacy. Despite a few good projects here & there in NYC, NYSDOT is largely in a time warp in terms of policy & output (Still waiting on that study of the West Side Highway)

This has been my personal issue for a while - though it's become more evident since I stopped blogging. Once-per-year updates on Penn Station Access or 2nd Ave. or OMNY or a multi-billion-dollar rolling stock plan just should not be acceptable, and Albany should do its own regular oversight here too

US isn’t taking climate change seriously when it comes to transport policy Other countries are demonstrating that they can (1) mode shift toward transit, walk, bike; (2) electrify; (3) densify. US failing on all fronts. Result is that US emissions from transport aren’t falling as they should

The Penn Station project master agreement that had Janno Lieber so crabby did in fact contain every provision he raised an alarm about: lobbying for Amtrak's funding demands, opening up the lease, not having a say in final designs. FIRST in Streetsblog nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/09/25/r...

Oy. In a world where most US cities have barely scratched the surface of what bikes and transit can do — and where the federal government is actively hostile to such projects — we're a long way from driverless cars being a nice little "missing middle" of urban mobility.

The MTA has been planning to reroute the B65 for years, long before Mamdani’s bike boulevard plans. And the reason? Because there are so many double parked cars on Dean/Bergen that buses literally get stuck. IT’S THE CARS. AS USUAL.

The #mapoli MAGA candidate for governor wants to suspend the state gas tax when prices go over $4/gallon. His plan for responding to federal foreign policy folly is to disinvest in our transportation system. A better plan would be to make commuter rail free while gas prices exceed $4.

It's so much less stressful traveling around town when you know the headways are always going to be 3-5 minutes. You don't worry about running for trains or getting places on time. Shorter trains, more frequently is so much better than the way the MTA treats off-peak headways.

One minor quibble with this very good report on the mayor's announcement about a Vision Zero reboot. Vision Zero is not about the "three E's" at all. It's largely about designing streets so that mistakes don't lead to death. Education is barely a part of it. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/09/15/v...
The main pillars of Vision Zero are the so-called “three E’s”: engineering (such as road redesigns), education and enforcement, involving, mostly the NYPD.
