IMO: The real lesson here is that a trader’s strategy of landing one or two massive bets is not how government policy works.

Important reminder to vote yes on the ballot question that would allow the mayor's office and DOT to speed up the installation of safe street designs, bike lanes, and transit upgrades. These are the people who want to retain their veto and keep us mired in a dysfunctional status quo.

To quote Lando Calrissian, this deal is getting worse all the time. 10-ish years is certainly going to turn into longer, closing playgrounds and ruining local residents' lives, only to lock in the current design for generations. We need to think bigger. (And I get that this US DOT makes that hard.)

This has been my personal issue for a while - though it's become more evident since I stopped blogging. Once-per-year updates on Penn Station Access or 2nd Ave. or OMNY or a multi-billion-dollar rolling stock plan just should not be acceptable, and Albany should do its own regular oversight here too

Oy. In a world where most US cities have barely scratched the surface of what bikes and transit can do — and where the federal government is actively hostile to such projects — we're a long way from driverless cars being a nice little "missing middle" of urban mobility.

As a child of the BQE, the rush to replace it rather than remove it reflects generations of power players with Brooklyn-brain, who have trouble imagining their own lives without the highway but the borough's neighborhoods managed quite well before it was built and can do it again

13,000 trucks are either just passing through Brooklyn now, in which case they can find another route to their destination, or they have business in the borough, in which case they travel local streets already and may take a more direct path in the absence of the highway

If the City is already footing the huge bill, at great cost to other important capital projects and potentially basic services, in order to skirt federal highway standards, then let's also close some offending ramps or make someone else pick up the mounting tab

The MTA has been planning to reroute the B65 for years, long before Mamdani’s bike boulevard plans. And the reason? Because there are so many double parked cars on Dean/Bergen that buses literally get stuck. IT’S THE CARS. AS USUAL.
