A lot of you are scoffing at Meta's claim that $4B in Zuckerberg compensation and a bunch of data center build outs qualify for a "research tax credit", but seeing how far you can push the bullshit before people resort to violence is, legitimately, research... itep.org/metas-outlan...

If you see this post a vampire that isn't Dracula.
A still from the movie "Let The Right One In", two children lie on a carpeted floor, looking at each other. On the left is Eli, an ancient vampire inhabiting the body of a dark-haired 12 year old girl, looking at Oskar, a blond bullied child.

Rounded buttons reduce visual (and sometimes actual) target areas, making them harder to use. Radius-ed corners on windows and panels reduce content areas for no gain. Rounded and radius-ed features are entirely form over function, aesthetics ahead of usability. Let's end this awful 25 year trend.

it’s amazing to me that first apple invented the least lossy user interface ever (multi-touch) — where you interact with software controls *directly* & instantly and now the next “big thing” is writing text instructions, the slowest, most disintermediated and lossy way possible

Let this sink in. Cornell University refused to refund Jane Doe's tuition the semester she was raped. Without this money, she could not transfer to another school. Essentially, she was forced to stay on campus where she saw those seven rapists frequently. Eventually she dropped out of college.

Many comfortable white people prefer to believe the lie that welfare recipients are just lazy scammers since the alternative is deeply uncomfortable: people are suffering as a result of the same structure that enables their comfort.

California has spent over $400 million in settlements for Law Enforcement misconduct since 2010. I know because I built a site to track it: captainacab.com We're updating every week, and slowly expanding across the country. (boosts welcome)

Let me give you the actual solution to this problem. Universities and colleges have to hire football players as union employees (AFL-CIO, same as the NFL), with no requirement to attend school. They get health and retirement benefits, and are limited to a five year employment contract.

Huh. Google Maps has an interesting tile mismatch at certain zoom levels over Fairfax right now.... Or there's been a tremendous suburban sprawl event west of town with interesting clipping regions. www.google.com/maps/place/F...
A screenshot of Google Maps showing what should be open space west of Fairfax California, but the satellite view for several tiles shows a suburban street grid, possibly of Petaluma California, with the racetrack in the lower left corner and the airport in the upper right.

So less than 5 years ago, korean company Kakao bought the serial fiction site Radish for $440 million, Tapas for $510 million. Both were moneymaking sites where a fair number of romance and erotica writers made bank. But they shut down Radish less than a year ago, and now Tapas will close, too. Why?

Remember conversations with school board members in the late 1990s about how maybe cramming "tech" into every orifice without a curriculum need wasn't a good idea? Public safety doesn't have nearly the inertia of education, and pressure comes from a lot of fronts.

It's like a suicide shot of cognitive biases. Once you assume that it's smart, confirmation bias comes into play; LLMs give you a *ton* of input for your brain to do confirmation bias on, a sort of semantic overload. It's actually not that different from software fuzz testing...
