Taught my first #MathsToday lessons of the year! I forgot how much fun this topic is with Year 7. Today we played “guess the method from the calculation”.
The instruction “Count the dots in two different ways” and three copies of the same pattern of dots. Next to each one a calculation has been written - these were answers from different students. The patterns have then been annotated to show other students’ guesses as to how they arrived at these calculations.

A starter for my class who have had one lesson of C≈3.14×d. 'Measure the diameter of each circle and calculate the circumference ... and stop bending the rulers.' #UKMathsChat #iTeachMaths
Four diagrams involving circles but with parts of the circumferences obscured so that it's not physically possible to measure the diameter. Pupils can however measure radii and use reasoning to determine the required diameters.

If you can imagine a regular octagon with its corners labelled 1 to 8 going around clockwise, draw a line from 1 to 4 and another from 2 to 5. This will create two triangles, which are shaded in.
