I love Labour Party Conference so much Where else do you casually bump into a Minister of Defence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, or see thousands of policy nerds squeezing their brain juices to the last drop to make the country better

we have passed a threshold where i am comfortable saying that the left *must* be using and leveraging AI it can be done responsibly there’s no going back, and to avoid or reject this technology at this point would be a massive generational mistake that lets the far right take further control

I wrote a(nother) thing! This time it is about how no amount of military technical excellence can salvage a situation where political leadership has, in their abject strategic incompetence, demanded the military accomplish an impossible mission. Gift link: foreignpolicy.com/2026/08/21/i...

As a side point - one thing the far right are very good at doing is bombarding MPs inboxes which (alongside protests, polling, media etc) is one of the things which makes MPs responsive to their issues

The US Civil War (1861-65) ran concurrently within the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864). USCR: 600-700k deaths/4 yrs... ~ 175,000 killed/yr TPHK: 20-30M deaths/14 yrs... ~1.4-2.1M killed/yr There were single battles & city slaughters that eclipsed over a few days the entire yearly KIA of the US war.

This really should be bigger news. Most important driver on long-term changes in living standards is productivity and recent revision to how it is measured suggests output per hour actually grew almost twice as fast from 2009 to 2019 (up from 0.7% a year to 1.3% a year)

It's incredibly annoying that the vacuum where the understanding of what Palantir does should be is filled with absolute dross. It's nearly inevitable that it will be like that, because practically no one writing about Palantir saw problems they solve and systems they build.

Even more depressingly, we can just get rid of drivers and not have hundreds of reported but unprosecuted rapes and sexual offences every year (from content.tfl.gov.uk/tph-sexual-o... ) Unfortunately because vibes we'd rather talk about imagined harms than the actual, observed harms

They are doing the usual framing of "DoD can't get an audit with a clean opinion therefore no one has any idea where literally any of the money is going or being spent," when the reality is we know how every dollar is spent and say so publicly

the issue with the audit is traceability everyone knows where all the money is going (if we didn't the appropriators would raise holy hell), the problem is being able to account for every dollar throughout the entire life cycle of that dollar, through depreciation and ultimate disposal

Graphic with a blue background and the headline “Cleaner air. Healthier lungs.” At the top is the Mayor of London logo. A photograph shows two children running along the Thames with Tower Bridge in the background.

Text below reads: “A landmark study by Queen Mary University of London found that, following the introduction of the ULEZ, lung growth in children in Central London accelerated, helping them catch up with children outside the capital.”

At the bottom, the source reads: “Source: thelancet.com/journals/lanpub/article/PIIS2468-2667(26)00163-5/fulltext”

More than half of accounts posting about violence in Belfast & Southampton on X were based overseas. Only 4 of the 12 most-seen posts were from the UK. X is now "“a weapon of choice” for hostile foreign actors seeking to manipulate shocking & divisive content". www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...
"Nearly a third of all 43,000 posts on X relating to the two incidents contained racist or anti-immigration comments. Almost one in 10 relating to Belfast contained calls for violence or paramilitary or vigilante action.

Imran Ahmed, the chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, said the data demonstrated that X had become “a weapon of choice” for hostile foreign actors seeking to manipulate shocking and divisive content.

Their goal, he added, was “to amplify local tragedies and crises, intensify racist narratives, and incite violence in communities they have never set foot in and to whom they have no real connection.”"
