I love Labour Party Conference so much Where else do you casually bump into a Minister of Defence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, or see thousands of policy nerds squeezing their brain juices to the last drop to make the country better

We just accepted the right wing framing of tax = bad, so Labour doesn't even try to argue that working and paying taxes is moral and that everyone should get things back for the tax we're paying

(necropost) I find it interesting to ponder why compulsory income insurance like www.a-kasser.dk/unemployment... is not even on the radar for any political party in the UK

You don't need a study to see how one-off tools that would take a professional a number of hours or days (and thus won't get made) take an activist half an hour now

we have passed a threshold where i am comfortable saying that the left *must* be using and leveraging AI it can be done responsibly there’s no going back, and to avoid or reject this technology at this point would be a massive generational mistake that lets the far right take further control

I wrote a(nother) thing! This time it is about how no amount of military technical excellence can salvage a situation where political leadership has, in their abject strategic incompetence, demanded the military accomplish an impossible mission. Gift link: foreignpolicy.com/2026/08/21/i...

As a side point - one thing the far right are very good at doing is bombarding MPs inboxes which (alongside protests, polling, media etc) is one of the things which makes MPs responsive to their issues

There's a crucial difference: this very reaction - you know of it - you're ashamed of it Europe managed to hold the mirror up, look, and regret the crimes. Not the case for most (all?) other imperialisms. Absolutely not the case for Russia, for example. Doubtful that it's the case for China.

The US Civil War (1861-65) ran concurrently within the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864). USCR: 600-700k deaths/4 yrs... ~ 175,000 killed/yr TPHK: 20-30M deaths/14 yrs... ~1.4-2.1M killed/yr There were single battles & city slaughters that eclipsed over a few days the entire yearly KIA of the US war.

This really should be bigger news. Most important driver on long-term changes in living standards is productivity and recent revision to how it is measured suggests output per hour actually grew almost twice as fast from 2009 to 2019 (up from 0.7% a year to 1.3% a year)

insane how much good will, longstanding trust, and real business 1Password is willing to destroy just so they can donate some money to a racist project — this is such a catastrophically dumb move that should’ve been a no brainer to walk back within the first 12 hours

So much this And frankly the dhh donation is just a cherry on the cake. They rebuilt their company as a standard SV outlet (B2B SaaS focus, chasing AI, frequent updates) and don't deserve the trust anymore

It's a bubble not a con. But also here's a thing: after this bubble bursts, the US will have a ton of bankrupt companies. They will also have more infrastructure and expertise for post-bubble adoption than anyone and a permanent advantage. Maybe our distaste of bubbles needs more nuance.

In my view, economics (and therefore living conditions) matter more in the medium to long run. We extended the depressive, disempowering plight of disadvantaged kids from the hoods to middle classes. What's the point of working and striving if having a home of your own…

Right, but memes and attitudes take time to propagate. Like the get-rich-quick-through-property thing that homeowners experienced in the 2000s can't repeat again, BTLs are poor business for quite a while, and yet property schemes have been seen as THE key to wealth for what, two decades now?

Yes, but also there are qualitative differences now. Asset wealth (primarily housing) got much further removed from income than in the most of 20th century, which might affect ambitions and aspirations

You yourself just argued how drones are good for protracted economic warfare. They don't work for stopping munition manufacturing or breaking armoured advances.

I just don't think it's a sufficient strategy to stop Russia from attacking the Baltic states. "Guys you can try attacking but if you do your economy will suffer in a few years" didn't work for Ukraine and wouldn't work to defend Lithuania

Dan Groshev @dangroshev.com · 31/08/2026
Any air defence system leaks at some point. Theirs is still extremely capable (otherwise Ukraine would be much freer to operate their planes) and would decimate a NATO air force without the US support.

Dan Groshev @dangroshev.com · 31/08/2026
I take it Russia is folding now? Supporting Ukraine doesn't mean drinking the social media kool-aid.

Dan Groshev @dangroshev.com · 31/08/2026
You can notice that the targets that you listed (oil, large warehouses full of flammable goods) are very, very thin-skinned and flammable, so those tiny drones can do something. There's a reason there were so few attempted hits at like Almaz-Antey.

Dan Groshev @dangroshev.com · 31/08/2026
That doesn't stop Russia from growing ballistic missile production or launching a hundred+ at Ukraine every month. They absolutely do have air defence, just compare the number of reported launches and the number of reported hits, they are apart by about two orders of magnitude.

I suppose the heavily hinted motivation here is a large additional number of people with low lifetime earnings and therefore their lifetime tax not covering their own needs in the old age.
