Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026#LTHEChat A6 Yes - one hour to sit and stare - what a lovely idea!! (Of course following my logic - it should be a module - and at the end they should produce something that reflected back to the rest of us what that hour per week had brought them - even if it were just the joy of boredom!) 152

Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026#LTHEChat A5 One big pandemic lesson was how important the social was & hats off to staff who ran quizzes and film nights and writing socials so that students could have some of that social interactive stuff... BUT - we don't do that now & of course it wouldn't be funded - but perhaps is should be? 021
Reposted by Sandra Sinfield@suebecks @suebecks.bsky.social · 30/09/2026A4 In addition to a timetabled class and hopefully more than one, it could be attending a peer group meeting, a society or sport activity, a careers event or time spent in the library or quiet space to work on an assignment. #LTHEchat 172
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026#LTHEChat A4Travelling in shd be rewarded with interaction, not a lecture. Interactive workshops, dialogic seminars, time to be in the canteen together - and perhaps that module that rewards you for being a peer mentor or belonging to the SU or being in a Club or Society or something else glorious? 031
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026I don't care whether the room is virtual or F2F, but being in the room should matter. It's about human relationships, supporting each other, playing with ideas together - and co-constructing knowledge together. Learning is not a spectator sport but a team event ? #LTHEChat 130
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Yes - and reaching out to students who have missed sessions is not surveillance but care, sometimes they are nervous about returning... and I don't care if the class is online or F2F, but I do want students to have time together to bond, and create learning together. #LTHEChat 030
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026#LTHEChat A3 When we had an office it was full of joyful resources & a fridge, microwave, kettle and tea, coffee, biscuits. People would pop their heads round the door and something magical happened, even if it was just a happy tea and a chat. Booking to sit in silence at a workspace can't compete! 140
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026#LTHEChat A3 It's wierd when we reward students by suggesting they not come in. With our various reading/enhancement weeks, we would hold exhibitions of student work, we would say when we would be in the canteen so they could find us for a chat. We wanted to show they mattered & being there counted 021

Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026We tried to recreate that commonroom feel when running drop-ins - with an urn for tea and coffee and biscuits for an early morning catch up - and a friend at work has that arrangement for all her students - a friendly place to drop-in, make tea, have a chat #LTHEChat 251
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026#LTHEChat A2 Students are too busy & weighted with work and responsiblities - they would need 'permission' to just be in and around the university these days. Same with staff: if we're not being visibly productive we're doing something wrong! Slow time, laughter, just 'being with' is a luxury 031
Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 30/09/2026It's one reason why we always set our students out and about to see where learning was actually happening around the university - and in reading weeks, rather than the reward being not to come in, we would be in the canteen - happy to meet with them informally ... #LTHEChat 100

Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 24/09/2026We know anyway, but you definitely know that more than the academic route matters when you look at private schools with their art, music, drama classes, their sports fields and their development of student confidence, agency and selfefficacy - all of which Gove wanted to take away from our schools. 010

Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I teach online so slides are quite useful, but I avoided them F2F for years. I loved creating the class in real time, making pattern notes on the board to model notemaking. The other horror is staff telling students not to make notes they can look at the slides later. Sandra Sinfield @danceswithcloud.bsky.social · 24/09/2026The PPT seems to have constrined our very thinking about teaching! Going in to a room with a chalk or white board and a few notes and an idea - and then creating the class - and making the notes on the board as we go - such a powerful modelling of active learning #LTHEchat 070
