The problem is that this is going to turn out to be true for so very many things that were previously unaccounted for in IAMs and SCC estimates. Wildfire smoke is a clear example, but likely one of many (perhaps innumerably so) that we seem destined to learn about only once they get bad enough.

EIA forecasts that even if the Strait of Hormuz begins opening soon, the conflict will increase price of US gasoline alone by ~65 cents/gallon (23%, $700/year per family) over the next two years. The gas tax politicians have been too scared to increase since 1993 is 18 cents/gallon 😳

I would strongly encourage those who value the scientific & societal legacies of NCAR to offer feedback by March 13. I would expect, under present circumstances, perspectives from industry partners will be especially critical, though everyone's voice is of course important.

2025 was the 2nd-hottest year on Earth's surface and by far the hottest La Niña year on record. Remember when 1998 with its monster El Niño was super hot and then we had to argue about a warming 'pause' after that? 2026 was more than 0.5°C hotter than 1998 despite a modest La Niña event (2/8)

Some missing important context here – the SPEED Act was never going to pass Congress as a standalone bill. It or some of its provisions will probably be included in a comprehensive package, but Congress isn't going to pass piecemeal permitting reform bills, just one comprehensive bill (hopefully).
