I think we treat reading and writing, specifically, as learnable (as opposed to visual art and music, which get a lot of the same "innate talent" talk) though this might be a me-specific recollection, I have never been even decent at the latter two (though this never stops me from singing)

I think we will someday miss having the MLS season end immediately before the college football playoffs, just for the timely hit of perspective on what a dysfunctional and confusing playoff system actually looks like

I'm happy for the opportunity Wilfried Nancy has taken but Celtic IN PARTICULAR feels like hard mode because the fans are not used to having more than one other team to worry about

in retrospect we shouldn't have made so much fun of Ted Stevens actually at the time we shouldn't have made so much fun of him, he was pretty much correct if you compensate for "old person talking about thing invented after his prime"

the thing about middlemen is that everyone hates them but whenever they're removed they just reconstitute themselves because it turns out everyone also hates the cognitive load of dealing with all the individual providers of the vast variety of goods and services and content we want

I am extremely sympathetic to the design of the post-LRT Ottawa transit system as a concept, even though it has made a number of people's individual commutes require more transfers than they used to its actual EXECUTION, thanks to resource constraints from Council, has been borderline unforgivable

Justin Trudeau messed this up/failed to expand on this when trying to describe Canada as "post-national" but "post-ethnic" would be more accurate (and Kai is right that this is or should be a pan-New World settler-colony ethos)

MLS Cup today features the longest road trip in the league and I deeply miss being young enough to think this would be an awesome idea happy trails, my dude, I'll look out for you on the telecast
“I'll explain,” said Tobyn Rootman, part of the Vancouver Albion supporters' group.

“So I'm flying with one of my best friends, Ben, who's the vice president of the supporters' group that I'm a part of. We are leaving Vancouver at 9:30 am on Friday. We go to Chicago. We've got a couple of hours in Chicago, then we go to Atlanta. And we arrive in Atlanta at about 11 pm ET. And then we were staying the night at the Atlanta airport. We've got a 6:30 am flight to Miami International Airport. So we get there at about 8:30 am, we go to our friend's hotel straight from the airport and drop our bags at about 11. Then we head to the stadium. We go straight back to the hotel, grab our bags, go straight to the Fort Lauderdale Airport, where we catch a 9 pm flight back to Atlanta, where we spend the night in the Atlanta airport again, and then get a 6:30 am flight the next morning to San Francisco and then a flight home.

“It cost us about CAD $500 round trip, and we're not paying for any hotels, so we're doing it on a budget... Both of us are students, but you've got to do what you've got to do to support your club. Especially in moments like these.”

while I acknowledge that the conception of "the important parts of your job" that is actually important is the one belonging to the people that sign your paychecks/buy your products, who are often very easily misled, this nonetheless feels true of knowledge and creative workers in general

I mean Chris is right about it being a "success" (the Santa Fe was incapacitated and essentially retreated) but it's kind of funny for *two* people to have a "Do you know who you're talking to?" moment in one exchange?
Twitter thread starting from Apr 25, 2025:

Chris Parry (@DrChrisParry): This just happened 43 years ago. [Image of a helicopter dropping a charge onto a submarine]

Chad (@chadpollard): How many depth charge attacks on a submarine have there been since 1945?

Chris Parry: The Swedes dropped some in the Cold War and others were dropped in the Falklands War. This was the only successful attack.

Bikain (@MarianoBicain, May 2): Successful attack? The Santa Fe got back to grytviken and moor at the dock. Did not sink her!

Chris Parry: Look bozo - you weren't there. So wind your neck in.

Bikain: My father was the commander submarine S21 ARA Santa Fe. I know the storie. Bozo? More respect please.

"social media quickly shapes a local consensus that feels like a universal consensus" is *extremely* well-put. beyond activist spaces, where i have little experience, this is a helpful and concise way to understand a huge range of problems that our political system is currently going through
