We probably aren't heading toward another major global conflict. That's the good news. The bad news: I'm much less confident about that than I was only a few months ago. The trend lines are bad! In @thelineca.bsky.social, here's my best shot at explaining what might go wrong, and why.

My latest column for @thelineca.bsky.social "None of what Harper is suggesting ought to be controversial. Canada is not being asked to make unusual sacrifices, unheard of in the annals of history. We’re being asked to function pretty much like a normal country and do normal-country things."

"If Canada was in a trade war with a truly 'United' States, filled with terrible purpose like it was after Pearl Harbour or 9/11, the strategic move would be to hide in the outhouse until the big bad wolf had finished flattening our cottage. "But we aren't."

Opinion: Canada and Ukraine are partnering to build weapons that will be needed in future wars, writes @mattgurney.bsky.social. Both countries play to their strengths: Canada brings relative safety from Russian attack. Ukraine brings a degree of procurement efficiency to which we can only aspire.

Because I suck at taking time off, my latest in @thelineca.bsky.social. I'm bored of the idiotic debate in this country between "We suck, we deserve this" and "We're perfect, but for Trump." It's neither. Trump is bad. We also have a lot of problems at home. www.readtheline.ca/p/matt-gurne...

The instinct of Canadian officials and bureaucracy to be factual with select information, while keeping much of it hidden from the public, will be at odds with the U.S.'s willingness to say pretty much everything and anything to win the info war.

Utterly incoherent message from the UAW here, saying the American autoworkers don't support escalation against Canada except they DO support... auto and heavy truck tariffs. uaw.org/uaw-presiden...
The UAW rejects any escalation on Canada, a country with strong unions and labor standards. If we’re going to increase tariffs anywhere, it should be on countries where automakers continue to offshore jobs because they can pay workers $3 an hour, force them to work in unsafe conditions, and crack down on independent unions.

Here at the UAW, we are fighting to end the free trade disaster. Free trade pits workers against each other across borders and is fueled by corporate greed. That’s why we will always support strategic tariffs, including the 232 tariffs on auto and heavy truck. Tariffs work, but only if they are deployed intentionally to protect workers and grow our manufacturing communities.

It’s time to permanently end offshoring and the race to the bottom. We need well-designed tariffs, and a comprehensive rewrite of the USMCA and other bad trade deals.
