Excited to share our new paper in Science Advances! Led by Dr Wei Wang at #IVPP in Beijing, it presents a complete skeleton of #Austronaga, the most marine of all archosauromorphs. To boot, this fossil preserves the oldest complete digestive tract of any reptile! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Today's four (not so random) random pieces of palaeoart: Charles Knight's Carboniferous Coal Swamp, E. Boyd Smith's Permian Scene, @prehistorica.bsky.social's Arthropleura, and Matt Celeskey's Cotylorhynchus!
A riparian forest choked by horsetails and towering scale trees. A dark-skinned, broad-headed temnospondyl cruises down a stream, while a small salamander-like tetrapod hauls itself out of the water.A Permian lakeside, prowled by a menagerie of strange creatures including a fuzzy-faced, elongated Dimetrodon, a snail-like ammonite, and a hulking green herbivore with a spiny back. In the lake, a long-necked ichthyosaurian creature and a swan-necked plesiosaur can be seen. A wide-bodied, studded Arthropleura trundles along a seashore. Its spiky back has a simple, earthy brown colour with two long black streaks down its length, flecked with little dots of red.A hulking Cotylorhynchus digs into wet mud, tearing up roots as rain pours down on its wrinkled, lightly scaled hide.

Pixel art of a green background and black details showing Silescelida acristata, a small lizard-like animal from 240 million years ago. It has a lizard-like body, long tail and predatory jaw, with two legs raised as is walks forward, mouth open showing its teeth. The environment is rocky and warm, with horsetail plants and rock around and a bright sun overhead, covered partially by a cloud.

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart: Vladimir Krb’s Allosaurus and Camptosaurus, Bernard Long’s Corythosaurus, William Stout’s Stegoceras, and John Francis’ Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus!
A yellow Allosaurus with green speckles, a reddish head, and a deep throat pouch crouches over the carcass of a Camptosaurus on a sandy plain, backed by strange, sparse prehistoric trees.A Corythosaurus with deep green scales and a yellow belly stands in an alert, erect posture while chewing a mouthful of conifer needles. Its back has a crenulated texture reminiscent of pie crust and its clawed fingers are webbed.Stegoceras in portrait and in side view. It has an almost skeletally thin build unevenly bulked out by bulging muscles. The head is covered in rugose scaly armour.A low slung, robustly built blue-grey Triceratops stands atop a hill, bracing itself for the approach of a similarly hulking Tyrannosaurus which stands in the middle distance.

Another underrated ecosystem engineer: arborescent lycopods! Plants do a lot to shape their ecosystems, but these things in particular hoovered up so much water from the swamp - and then had it transpire out through the leaves AND the trunk - they sustained the high humidity of the peat swamps

Historical illustration from 1838 showing three side-profile drawings of aquatic mammals. The central figure is a beluga whale, depicted in light gray with a rounded forehead, small flippers, and a fluke tail. Above it is a darker, more streamlined dolphin-like creature labeled "Aodon Dalei," with a long beak and small dorsal fin. Below the beluga is a third dark figure with a long snout filled with visible teeth, identified as "Susu Platanista." The background is plain cream paper with numbered labels and scientific names beneath each animal. The style is detailed and engraved, typical of 19th-century scientific plates.

sauropods: Giraffes? You mean those awkwardly proportioned animals with the short, stubby necks and enormous heads?
Illustration of Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum by Júlia d'OliveiraI

They are enormous saurpods with some estimates as high as 35 meters (115 ft). Their necks appear to have more mass than the rest of their body and comprise about of about half the total length with a long tail included. Attached at the end of those necks are the most pathetically tiny heads, which makes me imagine that they would need to eat all day just to feed that stupid neck.
