Led by the incomparable Sanaa El-Sayed, a study out today in Science Advances throws open an important new window on marine fish diversity during the critical few million years following the K-Pg mass extinction. Below: artistic vision of the new fauna by Ian Baylatry.

A new Science Advances study led by Sanaa El-Sayed reveals that many modern fish groups were already diversifying in Egypt less than 4Ma after the extinction of the dinosaurs, providing a rare glimpse into the recovery of ancient marine ecosystems. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aec8978

quick little thingo of the new aussie trilobite: Triarthrus novoaustralis trying to be more okay with imperfections in my art, i still struggle with focusing on fine details which dont really add much to the final composition, even here i admittedly do it a bit #AusPalaeo #paleoart #bug #sciart
a Triarthrus novoaustralis raises its head towards the left of the frame. yellow warm light illuminates it from the left, while white cool light illuminates it from the right

Triarthrus novoaustralis is a somewhat long, but very small trilobite, a kind of ancient arthropod with an egg-like shape when viewed from the top

Happy #FossilFriday! Today I take the time to look back at some of my earliest paleoart, I think from when I was 5ish… I’m not really sure what was going on here.

Last week @thepeanutpal.bsky.social asked if I had any photos from the old Royal Ontario Museum fossil halls. Here I am remembering! These are all from their photo archives—this exhibit was overhauled in 2006 or so.

Also in a diorama setting with lots of fernsRelief mounted Edmontosaurus on a wall with stipend that represent stratigraphyMounted Stegosaurus skeleton with Allosaurus peeking in from left of frame. I see the invertebrate #paleontologists are stirring up inter-lab hostilities early this week.
Drawing of a brachiopod in a circle with a line through it, done in dry erase marker on a white board. Text reads, "Colin says no to brachs, so should you!"
