Mass car use is geometrically incompatible with great cities. Transit & bikes are the future. Tech things sometimes.

*so important*: if you’re voting by mail, assume the USPS will delay because it’s its policy. You can: —put it in drop box —go to counter to watch them postmark in front of you —if you’re dropping it in a mailbox, do it VERY EARLY.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

I grew up in cul-de-sacs that were on the very edge of the developed area, and could escape into semi-wilderness, but I had no way to go anywhere outside the neighborhood before I could drive. Completely trapped. Realizing that didn't have to be the case was a big shift for me!

Twice named the "most dismal city in Scotland," Cumbernauld is well known as a brutalist, auto-oriented town-planning disaster. But this week my friends and I discovered it has an entire subdivision called "Carbrain." Yes, #Carbrain. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotlan...

All of this is indicative of a profound shift in the projected underlying cool season precipitation distribution in California. In southern California, the shift vs typical conditions is so dramatic that it essentially looks like that of a different climate region.
Blue histograms show 51 forecast members; dashed gray histograms show historical model members. Both use unsmoothed 25-percentage-point bins and integrate to one. Regional means are 165%, 194%, 226%; 10, 17, 11 members exceed the Northern, Central, and Southern California record ratios. These are uncalibrated model outcomes.

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

I am not the right person to offer deep personal insight, as I don't have kids! That said, I'd want to have confidence in my child's situational awareness and ability to ask for help. I'd want ease into it - smaller rides first, talk about what they experienced, how they felt.

One of the strong arguments in support of dense, frequent transit is child and parent mobility autonomy once kids are mature enough. Parents who have figured this out in San Francisco are some of the biggest proponents of Muni. Suddenly everyone is happier and has more time!

At least in public. The development of LLMs, and their particular capabilities, looks more and more to adopt the specificity of context and task of reinforcement models. That's intentionally blurred in the press releases and public hype.

I'll add that Shane Legg -- one of the founders of Deep Mind -- produced a proof for his PhD thesis that no single agent will ever be maximally adopted for all tasks. This proof has been largely ignored as theologically inconvenient for two decades.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Robust market regulation sets the bounds of what makes sense to pursue. The main problem here is not the leadership of these companies, but the regulatory environment in which they are operating. The incentives are all wrong.
000
Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
You do sometimes see mature leadership declare that something isn't working and just shutdown. But it's rare. Financial (and legal) incentives tend to push toward pivots, even if they violate the supposed goals of the company and leadership.

Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
By "successful" I mean "still around and kicking." That's a pretty limited definition of success, but often the view from the executive board room doesn't go much further.

Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The fundamental truth about successful companies -- that a lot of people spend their lives trying to avoid -- is that they will do whatever it takes to survive. That strongly informs my policy beliefs, and is why I see a regulatory state as a hard necessity (if insufficient).

US isn’t taking climate change seriously when it comes to transport policy Other countries are demonstrating that they can (1) mode shift toward transit, walk, bike; (2) electrify; (3) densify. US failing on all fronts. Result is that US emissions from transport aren’t falling as they should
